Here’s What You Need to Know About Our New President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Last Tuesday night, millions sat in front of the TV eagerly awaiting the results of the 2016 presidential election. Would it be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton as the new president? Votes came pouring in from every state and the electoral votes continued to rise. The majority of the states on the map were red, meaning that the Republican party nominee Donald Trump had won the state. The majority of the nation was covered in red, even some states that are known to vote Democratic. Clinton won the popular vote with 61,039,676 votes compared to Trumps’s 60,371,193 votes. However, the turning point of the election came with the electoral votes, which many Clinton supporters disagreed with. The electoral votes are the true deciding factor in the outcome. Trump received 290 electoral votes while Clinton only received 228, according to Fox News. Donald Trump was elected the 45thtpresident of the United States and will be inaugurated on Jan. 20th, 2017.

Just so you can be informed collegiettes, here are some of the things that Donald Trump plans to reform once he’s inaugurated:

Healthcare

Trump plans to gain the approval of Congress to repeal Obamacare, according to his campaign website. Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, was created in March of 2010. Trump plans to take away Obamacare and reform healthcare so that it is *actually* affordable for all Americans. Some of the healthcare reforms as listed on his campaign website plan to “work with Congress to create a patient-centered health care system that promotes choice, quality, and affordability” and “allow people to purchase insurance across state lines, in all 50 states, creating a dynamic market”. We’re interested to see how this goes.

Economy

Trump wants to work towards an economy that will create 25 million jobs. By reforming tax, trade, and energy plans, this will help to create economic growth that will support the growth of jobs. In many of his speeches, he mentions bringing back business from China and other parts of the world that manufacture the products we use everyday. Will he do it? We don’t know.

Child Care

Trump’s childcare platform is designed to help families provide for their children. This includes childcare at work places. Trump also believes that all mothers should receive six weeks of paid leave after giving birth. Yes please.

Education

Trump plans on making school more accessible. He plans to make college easier to pay for by “working with Congress on reforms to ensure universities are making a good faith effort to reduce the cost of college and student debt in exchange for the federal tax break and tax dollars.”

Foreign Policy

By rebuilding the military, Trump plans to protect the security of the United States. His website states, “Peace through strength will be at the center of our foreign policy. We will achieve a stable, peaceful world with less conflict and more common ground.”

Immigration

Trump plans to “establish new immigration controls” in order to place American workers as the highest priority. He also plans “to protect the economic being of the lawful immigrants already living here.” According to Trump’s Immigration plan, he wants to “begin working on an impenetrable physical wall on the southern border, on day one.” He plans for Mexico to pay for this wall. He plans to deport “criminal illegal aliens”, meaning that any illegal immigrant that has a serious criminal record (beyond their immigration offenses) will be forced to leave the country.

National Defense

Trump’s ultimate goal regarding National Defense is to rebuild our military. There are many issues in our national defense system, including a lack of members and old equipment. He plans to increase the size of the Army to 54,000, the Marine Corps to 36 battalions, and the Navy to 350 ships, according to his website.

Taxes

Trump’s tax plans include decreases, focusing on giving these tax deductions to the middle and working class, according to his platform. He want to make sure that the rich pay their part, “but no one will pay so much that it destroys jobs or undermines our ability to compete.” He wants to work towards an effective tax system that does not destroy the economy.

Trade

The Trans-Pacific Partnership has yet to be ratified, but Trump plans to back away from this deal. He also plans to renegotiate NAFTA, also known as the North American Free Trade Agreement. It was designed to make trading more efficient and cost-effective. His reforms for trade are with the main goal of creating jobs in America and “reducing America’s trade deficit.” By hiring people who are informed about trading, they may be able to increase income through trade negotiations.

Second Amendment

Trump believes in defending the Second Amendment, otherwise known as the right to bear arms. In order to defend this freedom granted by the Bill of Rights, Trump plans to nominate Supreme Court Justices with similar views about the right to bear arms. According to his website, he plans to “expand and bring back programs like Project Exile and get gang members and drug dealers off the street. When we do, crime will go down and our cities and communities will be a safer place to live.”

Veterans Affairs

Trump has developed what he refers to as a “10 Point Planto reform the care that veterans receive. Using this plan, the main goal is to make care accessible by eliminating distance and increasing availability at Veteran’s Affairs. This includes aiding the veterans both physically and mentally after returning from service.

Congratulations! Now you know that Donald Trump has real policies that he plans on implementing when he’s in the White House. All of this information came from his website, but there is much more information on the Internet that can be of good use to you informed collegiettes. He just did an interview on 60 Minutes and this CNN article did a great job of summarizing it. No word yet on if he’s going to be a good president, but we can hope for the best.
