As the world is still getting used to the idea of Trump being the new president-elect, many have begun to use comedy as way to generate more conversation about controversial topics. Comedians such as Trevor Noah, Micheal Che, Chelsea Handler, and many others have begun to use humor in order to make the world aware of issues that many wouldn’t necessarily find humorous.
Trevor Noah, a South African born comedian, who now hosts The Daily Show on Comedy Central, is basically CNN, but has a comedic spin on it. Earlier this week, Trevor Noah had Tomi Lahren on the show who is a Conservative (Republican) talk show host of her own show Tomi. Lahren has had some pretty controversial things to say about the Black Lives Matter movement and many other issues in regards to police brutality. Trevor Noah was able to use his comedic background in order to make Lahren actually think about some of her comments that she made that night and in the past. One of her comments being, “I don’t see color.” Noah follows up and says, “You don’t see color, so what do you do at a traffic light?” Noah’s ability to make the audience laugh, but at the same time be able to make the audience think about what Lahren actually said, is reasons why he was match enough to go toe-to-toe with Lahren.
“I believe that Donald Trump has created his own universe,” Noah said. “Within that universe, he takes a made-up idea, throws it at us in the real world, and whether we can prove him wrong or not, it doesn’t matter. We’ve lost. Because now, we’re in his universe … He could tweet anything. He could tweet that goblins are faster than unicorns, and the next day the news would lose their minds. CNN would bring out a hologram unicorn, Don Lemon would host a panel where people would argue about goblins, and after all that Trump would just tweet that the news is bad at journalism because they can’t prove their claims – claims no one could prove because Trump invented them.” – Trevor Noah
