The Holidays in a Mason Jar

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

The holiday season is here, and it’s time to think about what gifts to get your friends and loved ones (if you haven’t already). It’s also time to think about the cute holiday decorations you want to make your dorm or home more festive. So, why not solve both dilemmas at once with the biggest holiday season necessity: mason jars!

You can find these cute jars at stores like Target, Walmart, Michaels, Bed Bath and Beyond – and almost anywhere for that matter. They are an absolute must for the holiday season, as it’s impossible to run out of ways to put them to use. The possibilities for mason jar crafts and gifts are endless, but here a few of my personal favorites:

1. Gift card holder

One of the easiest ways to make a simple gift more meaningful is to give your loved one a gift card that they’ll appreciate inside a decorated mason jar that they may love even more. Simply put the gift card inside and decorate around it however you like. Adding a little note to the outside is a nice finishing touch.

2. Beauty supply gift

For your female friends, you can’t go wrong with the classic gift of beauty and makeup supplies. Add some nail polish, makeup, and other smaller beauty items to the jar and finish it off with a nice bow to create a gift your friends are sure to love!

3. Candy gift or decoration

Filling a mason jar with candy works either for a thoughtful gift or a classic decoration. Adding chocolate covered pretzels or any other small, tasty dessert will add a nice holiday touch to your home. Not to mention, who doesn’t love festive candy?

4. Hot chocolate gift

My personal favorite holiday mason jar idea is to use it to hold hot chocolate mix. A couple minutes of scrolling through Pinterest will supply you with hundreds of different recipes for hot cocoa. Whichever one you choose, adding it all to a decorated mason jar is an adorable present. Or just keep it for yourself. After all, you deserve a cup!

5. Snowflake decoration

Last but not least, put those artistic skills to use by painting your jar and adorning it with snowflakes for the winter time. This is a simple decoration that will cozy up your home and is sure to make you even more excited for the holidays.

Although there are likely hundreds of other ideas for how to put a mason jar to use this holiday season, hopefully this list gets you started on your new DIY adventure.
