Say Goodbye to Zits! Tips for Acne Prone Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Having beautiful skin is something many of us have sought after. Unfortunately, acne is a very common problem for a lot of people. Sometimes it seems like no matter what you do and how much you take care of your skin, there is no improvement. There are so many products that claim to help get rid of acne. After trying many of these products, here are some that worked great for me:

1) Clinique’s Acne Solutions Cleansing Gel

A good cleanser is one of the most important parts of a skin care routine. Clinique’s Acne Solutions Cleansing Gel is something that has worked well for me. This medicated cleanser helps remove makeup while unclogging pores and controlling oil. It has really helped minimize breakouts while leaving my skin feeling smooth.

2) Clean & Clear’s Dual Action Moisturizer with Salicylic Acid

This oil-free moisturizer is amazing! Not only does it help hydrate your skin, it also helps to clear up breakouts and keep you from getting new ones thanks to the salicylic acid. Sometimes I would get pimples from wearing makeup, but ever since I started wearing this before applying foundation, I have noticed a huge improvement in how my skin looks even after wearing makeup every day.

3) AcneFree Terminator Spot Treatment

Having a good spot treatment is necessary to help treat breakouts, and this is the best one I’ve ever tried! I use it at night whenever I get acne, and after using it for 2-3 days I notice a huge difference. It helps get rid of pimples quickly and effectively.

4) Clinique’s Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup

Another great product from Clinique’s Acne Solutions line is this foundation made especially for acne-prone skin. I’ve tried many foundations and have found that some give me clogged pores and acne, but this amazing foundation from Clinique helped my skin improve a lot. I was able to wear it every day without worrying about getting pimples! I highly recommend it.

I would like to touch a little on the topic of oral medication for acne, specifically a common one called Accutane. Accutane is usually prescribed to patients with severe acne, and it is said to be very effective in treating acne. However, it has many side effects, ranging from severe dry skin to suicidal thoughts. Accutane is so strong that women who are taking it are required to also take birth control pills because Accutane has been associated with birth defects. There have also been several cases of patients on Accutane becoming depressed and some even committing suicide. Now you may ask yourself: is it worth the risk to take Accutane in order to get clear skin?

I never had severe acne, mine was fairly mild, but I broke out often. A dermatologist recommended for me to try Accutane, and even after being told all the risks that came with it, I was so desperate for clear skin that I decided to try it. The first week was fine, I noticed a little bit of dryness but I thought it was no big deal and that I could just deal with it. As the days went by, I noticed that I felt really sick. I was so nauseous all the time and always felt agitated. I remember having to leave class because of how awful I felt. I couldn’t eat, and I noticed that I began feeling really anxious all the time and sad for no reason. I decided to stop Accutane, and after a week or two I began to feel normal again.

This was my personal experience with Accutane. It helped improve my skin, but overall I didn’t think it was worth it because of the side effects it gave me. Everyone responds differently to Accutane, but personally I think there are other, safer ways to get rid of acne. Along with using good skin care products, I noticed that eating healthy had a dramatic effect on my skin. For a few weeks I ate nothing but foods considered healthy, such as fruits, vegetables, an chicken, and cut out sweets and fast food. My skin looked great! When I started eating fast food again, I noticed that my skin went back to how it was before.

I know acne is not fun for anyone and that we would all do anything to get rid of it. With time it usually decreases, but in the moment it may feel like you’ll be stuck with it forever. Nonetheless, by following a good skin care routine with great products and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you will see a huge improvement in your skin!
