Indie rock quartet Colony House released their sophomore album Only The Lonely last week, a follow up to 2014’s When I Was Younger. Natives of Franklin, Tennessee, the band is comprised of brothers Caleb (vocals) and Will Chapman (drums) along with Scott Mills (guitarist) and Parke Cottrell (bass).

The album opens with “Cannot Do This Alone” a catchy, anthem-like tune, and one of my favorites on the album. The lyrics depict a cry for companionship, repeatedly proclaiming “I cannot do this alone”. The track is accompanied by driving guitar and a background of “oh’s” which give it a rich energetic sound.
Perhaps the best track on the album, “Lonely” begins with a simple stomp-clap intro which moves into a haunting round of vocals. A bluesy guitar riff comes in and the song sets off, and just when you think it’s about to end, a new beautiful guitar riff comes in and finishes the song.
“You and I”, the first single to be released from the album, is another stellar track. The song has hazy-like verses that move into upbeat and poppy choruses, which makes for the perfect mix. The star of “Where Your Father’s Been” is Caleb’s vocals, which seamlessly switch between baritone and alto throughout the song. The track draws the listener in to an intense moment and keeps them there for the duration of the song. “3:20”, which is heavily rock driven, is another one of my favorites. The song often shifts musically, but does so smoothly and with a nice flow.
The album finishes up with “This Beautiful Life” which begins with just Caleb’s vocals backed by a simple acoustic guitar. The song continues to grow as time passes, and features beautiful harmonies and a sweeping crescendo. This is the perfect song for fans to wave their cell phone lights to, and a beautiful ending to the album.
Overall, Only The Lonely is a fantastic album and the perfect way to start off 2017 in music. I definitely recommend giving it a listen and sharing it with your friends.
