10 Practical Winter Fashion Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

Beauty and fashion don’t always mean pain! These ten staples are sure to keep you cozy and fashion-forward this winter in the easiest of ways!

1. The Oversized Blanket Scarf

We are all too familiar with the wind piercing our faces on those frosty NYC mornings. Chunky and warm, this scarf keeps you bundled up and protected from the biting winds, and transforms a boring sweater and leggings outfit into one of a bona fide fashionista!

2. The Statement Coat

Outerwear is perhaps the most important aspect of winter wear because it is the only thing preventing you from turning into a popsicle on the way to class. If you feel rather bland sporting an all black ensemble, throw on a bright colored jacket to kick your look up a notch.  A thick overcoat will effortlessly blend fashion with function!

3. Over the Knee Boots

Heeled or flat, these chic and trendy booties are sure to add a new dimension and texture to any winter outfit whilst sheltering you from the cold. Over-the-knee boots can be dressed down with jeans and a sweater for the daytime, or dressed up with a mini skirt or sweater dress for a night out!

4. The Chunky Sweater

This sweater is the epitome of stylish comfort. Finding a slightly oversized, super-soft sweater for this season is the easiest way to look sophisticated on lazy days. And for the days that you feel like putting in the extra effort, pairing the sweater with some high-heeled boots and cinching it with a skinny belt can make you look extra fierce!

5. The Leather Jacket

This quintessential windbreaker is sure to make even the most mainstream outfits look pretty dapper. A durable, comfortable leather or faux leather jacket (for animal-friendly fashionistas!) can go with you from class to the nightclub or a business casual dinner without any fuss. Total Vogue material.

6. Ankle Booties

Ankle booties are another versatile winter essential. These super comfy boots easily add an extra oomph to classic outfits, and keep your feet warm and dry. Pairing them with some cuffed jeans and thick socks will add that extra bounce in your step so you can feel like the ultimate badass girl boss.

7. The Headband Beanie

This cozy knit beanie-alternative will keep your ears and forehead toasty even in the harshest of winds in NYC. Want to know something even cooler? You can rock a messy bun or ponytail and layer the beanie on top, making the worst hair days totally manageable.

8. Thick Gloves

Nothing ruins a comfy outfit like frozen blue fingers! Don’t forget to slip on a pair of sleek gloves before leaving your dorm because they will seriously make a difference. You will have soft hands and avoid any chances of frostbite. Leather gloves with a fur lining are especially protective, and also show off a more mysterious side to your personality.

9. The Turtleneck Top

This sleek piece keeps your neck warm and is great for a plain or layered look! Wear it with a sweater or coat on top and you will be out the door, feeling à la mode.

10. Fancy Sneakers

After a complete week of heeled booties, you should really give your poor feet a break. On the drier winter days, layer thick socks under some fancy sneakers to go from hip to snug and stylish! You can pair them with some jeans and a warm sweater for a trendy, casual look.
