These Movies are For The Culture

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Black History Month is here and we must celebrate our culture! There are so many movies with amazing black actors and directors that will always be classics in our communities. So let’s take a look at some of the culture’s favorite black movies!

Boyz n the Hood

Ricky, Tre and Doughboy gave us the inside scoop on life in the hood and how difficult it can be to beat the statistics. Believe it or not, the movie is pretty emotional and its realism can bring some tears. This one is definitely a classic.

Waiting To Exhale

Having a girl’s night where you all need to relax? Pop this movie in. It’s about four black friends dealing with their personal issues who are simply “waiting to exhale”. You probably saw your mom and aunts watching this when you were too young to understand.

Love & Basketball

I’m pretty sure Love & Basketball is on almost every black person’s list of favorite movies. Quincy and Monica are childhood friends who both share a strong love for the game of basketball. As they grow up different things tear them apart but in the end they realize that “all is fair in love and basketball.” We were all rooting for Quincy and Monica!

Menace II Society

Caine is living in the projects surrounded by gangs, drugs and his crazy best friend O-Dog. He wants to escape this violent environment but it’s tougher than he thinks. Not to mention the beautiful Jada Pinkett-Smith is his girlfriend.

Friday Trilogy

If you haven’t seen Friday, Next Friday, or Friday After Next then I don’t know where you’ve been. This series is definitely for the culture. Craig and Smokey are hilarious as they navigate through their hood on a typical Friday. Plus, this is where the line “Bye Felecia” line came from! Which movie is your favorite?

Madea’s Family Reunion

If you watch BET then you’ve definitely seen this. Out of all the Madea movies this is one of the best. From our crazy aunts, to our rebellious cousins I’m sure we can all relate to this family reunion in some way.

The Best Man

If you ask me, this movie is #goals from beautiful friendships to black love. However, the drama did make it juicier. It was definitely a “romantic comedy-drama film”. The sequel The Best Man Holiday is great as well but the first one will always have a special place in our hearts.

The Wood

This is the coming of age story for the black community. Watching Omar Epps, Taye Diggs and Richard T. Jones reminisce on their friendships as adults is a heartwarming experience. We got to see them enjoy life as they dated girls, went to school and just behaved like normal boys. It also has one of the funniest sex scenes ever!

Poetic Justice

Janet Jackson and Tupac served us a beautiful love story in Poetic Justice. After Justice (Janet) loses her boyfriend she uses poetry as her outlet. On an adventurous road trip with some friends she meets Lucky (Tupac) who she eventually falls for. We also have to thank Janet for blessing the culture with the “poetic justice” braids that almost every black girl has rocked.

ATL

I know when ATL came out I wanted to go see if Atlanta life was really like the movie. This movie will always be a favorite for the culture. Anytime I watch it with friends we recite the lines word for word. It’s a fun film but every character’s personal story is relatable for the young black generation. We can go on and on discussing all the black movies love. But if you are spending the night in make sure you check out some of these movies and you won’t be disappointed.
