Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th and is filled with PDA, chocolates, and single awareness. Over the years our celebrations of this holiday have evolved. Here is a timeline of Valentine’s Day and how we have grown to know it, love it, and maybe for some, hate it.
Childhood (Our Glory Days)
Valentine’s Day was everything when we were kids. First, you would go out on special shopping trip with your mom to pick out the perfect box of Valentines. To really impress your classmates, you sometimes would even splurge and buy heart shaped lollipops or pencils to include with each Valentine. Then came the hours spent on assigning a Valentine to each member of the class, saving the best one for your crush, of course. Then, after the in-class celebration, you would go home and look at each individual Valentine, hoping that Johnny signed his “love” because, if he did, you could tell your friends that you had a boyfriend. Ah, the good ole days.
Middle School
As “mature” teens, Valentine’s Day grew to be a bit more serious in middle school. You would sport your prettiest shirt with hearts on it and have your braces changed to pink for the special day. Perhaps February 14th would be the day that you finally held hands with your new boyfriend. Now that you are in middle school, this relationship is much more serious than the one with Johnny was. This relationship includes occasional hugging and maybe even a group hangout. Anyways, Valentine’s Day marks a big step in this love affair.
High School
In high school, Valentine’s Day meant maybe exchanging gifts with your S/O or awkward dates at Panera Bread. These gifts could have been a teddy bear, grocery store flowers, or (if you were lucky) something chocolate. Since young love is so very serious, this day was a big one for high schoolers. Oh, romance!
College
Now here you are. As “adults” many now want nothing more than a bouquet of chicken fingers and few funny memes this Valentine’s Day. Look how far you have come!
I hope you enjoy the holiday and celebrate with the people (or the food) you love!
