My first memorable Valentine’s Day was in the 5th grade. I had a boyfriend at the time and was so excited about how we were going to celebrate the big day. I’m a romantic, what can I say? My mind was filled with questions and expectations, “How long is his text going to be? What if he tries to hold my hand or something?! Do I really have to get him something in return?”

Finally, the day came. I walked into the classroom and my classmates were watching my every move, all thinking that my boyfriend had to have done something nice for me. I opened my locker and Valentine’s Day treats poured out– candy, flowers, gifts, cards. I was thriving. However, when I looked closely, I realized all these things were from a girl in my class who I thought was pretty weird (she’s my best friend now of course). Don’t get me wrong, my boyfriend did in fact gave me peace sign earrings, but somehow they didn’t compare to the gifts I received from this girl.

In 5th grade, all you did on Valentine’s Day was give stupid candy and cards to everyone you knew. Honestly, I would do anything for some Valentine’s Day chocolate regardless of who gave it to me. But oh, how this day has changed.

Rather than trying to voice how much Valentine’s Day changes as we grow up, here are five memes that accurately describe the struggle of all single ladies on this day every year.

Moral of the story, nowadays not everyone has a 5th grade boyfriend who will gift you with peace sign earrings. So find yourself a friend like mine who will spoil you with tons of food, cards, and company to forget the fact that it’s Valentine’s Day.
