8 Reasons Your Galentines Will Always Be Better Than A Valentine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

I love love and rom coms and chocolate as much as the next girl, but I also happen to think Valentine’s Day is a bit overrated. You’ve probably heard it before, but we shouldn’t limit ourselves to one day out of the year to show affection to our loved ones. And it certainly doesn’t mean we should feel pressure to have a date just because there is a holiday that revolves around romantic love. As much as that is important, it’s not the end all be all to be in a relationship. I happen to think your girlfriends are way better than having a date could ever be and here’s why.

1. You can’t talk about boys with a Valentine (for obvious reasons)

You know that thing best friends do? When they see a cute boy? It’s the look, nod, nudge that lets you know a cutie is in your presence. Not only can you not do that when with a date, but you certainly can’t gossip about him to his face either.

2. You can be as crass and gross as you could ever want to be with your girlfriends

Go ahead—eat a full box of chocolates. Burp, fart, curse. You don’t have anyone to impress because your girls know every part of you, even the sometimes crude parts.

3. You can’t have a GNO with a Valentine

There’s nothing quite as fun as getting done up with your friends and going out for drinks and chatting and dancing with no pressure of needing to behave in a certain way.

4. Your friends will know the exact present you want

They know your favorite kind of flowers and chocolates, and they know if those are things you hate, too. Regardless of how you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day or if you get gifts for each other, nothing can beat someone truly knowing all your likes and dislikes.

5. You can cuddle without any pressure for something more

Purely platonic cuddling with your besties is honestly the best way to spend time.

6. You can watch as many dumb/silly/romantic movies as you want

Boys generally seem to have an aversion to utterly romantic movies like The Notebook, fun musicals like Mamma Mia or crappy classics like From Justin to Kelly. It’s nice to have a marathon without a butt hurt boy complaining about the choice.

7. Your gal pals will always help you with the odd things

Whether it be telling you about the broccoli in your teeth or braiding your hair or checking that strange bump on your butt, they’ll always be around to make sure you’re at your best.

8. No one will listen to you quite like your besties do

In my experience with boys, they are always talking about themselves more than anything else. When you hang out with your girls, they just get it and will listen to your same pointless dramas over and over again even if they’ve already heard them twenty-three times.

So this Valentine’s Day, give a shoutout to your girls for always being the number ones in your life.
