Fifty Shades Got Darker & Our Hearts Are Swooning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

After much suspense and built up curiosity, Fifty Shades Darker finally made it’s debut on the big screen February 10th. Unlike most sequels—we would have to say that this movie was a lot more captivating than the original Fifty Shades movie.

In comparison to Fifty Shades of Grey, this time there was much less of a focus on the S&M that occurred between Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) and more on the #romance within the relationship. It was all very predictable that once Christian agreed to nix the contract for love—Anastasia would forgive him and fall back into his arms.

Talking amongst friends who also saw the movie—we recieved a variety of different reactions to the film. Some (and I quote) said “I can never watch another movie again that was so amazing,” while others expressed their extreme disappointment towards the sequel. Online reviews show low ratings that bash the sequel and advise that it is not worth seeing. Many also left confused as many parts of the movie, and especially the ending, was extremely ambiguous.

I myself left the theater having trouble gathering my thoughts on how I felt about the viewing. Some parts had me extremely intrigued, while others had me laughing out of the sheer stupidity of what was occurring. There was a lot that happened in just a two-hour movie—which almost made it overwhelmingly unrealistic and difficult to follow.

The relationship between Ana and Christian is extremely puzzling. From the lack of communication to the handcuffing and rope tying, you can’t help but giggle at the absurdity of the situation that this very innocent, shy girl has gotten herself into. Not to mention the workout scene which displayed a perfectly sculpted Mr. Grey as he casually transformed into a gymnast “coincidentally” as Anastasia entered the room.

Regardless of the reviews, Fifty Shades Darker was a must see—partly due to all the buzz and the partly due to the mere curiosity as to which scene would play “I Don’t Want To Live Forever” as the background music. As a result of the publicity surrounding the Fifty Shades series, the movie had a booming turnout—not only in the Hamilton movie theater, but across the nation as groups of people waited to be enlightened by the seductive Mr. Grey.

If you’re a Fifty Shades fanatic—odds are looking up with that cliffhanger of an ending!
