This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Do you believe in second chances? If not, this sequel in the Fifty Shades of Grey series will make you a believer. The movie showcases the love story that continues to unravel between the main characters Anastasia and Christian, after leaving off with the two going their separate ways in the first film due to different ideas of how their relationship should be. In the beginning of the sequel, we see what their lives are like without one another and that they are in fact meant to be with each other.

We also get to see the softer side to Christian in this movie; seeing why he is the way that he is and what his real demons are. This topic increases the plot levels and suspense levels drastically from the first movie. Fifty Shades Darker is without a doubt going to take you through a rollercoaster ride of emotions. This movie has a wide range of not only steamy romantic scenes that we saw in the first movie, but also dramatic scary scenes that will give anyone chills, everyday live scenes that make audience members have a chance to see a different side to what intimacy can truly mean, and heartbreaking scenes that are sure to make any audience member unable to listen to Sia’s ballad Helium the same way again.

The best addition to the second movie was the fashion, as Anastasia gets dressed up a few more times in this movie. Some of the fashions we get to see are the gorgeous ball gowns for the masquerade ball, the sparkling accessories from shoes and handbags to enormous diamond rings, and of course the lingerie sets that look like something straight out of a 50s pinup catalogue. The fashion game has definitely been taken to the next level in Fifty Shades Darker.

On a more serious note, this movie also focuses on a lot of serious issues that deserve to have attention put on them. These issues include sexual assault in the workplace, child abuse, mental health disorders, and drug abuse. The movie showcases all of these issues in a way that is very sensitive to those who are actually living with any of these or are survivors, and deserves praise for that.

If you have not seen this film yet, there are tons of reasons why you should. If you are someone who may be weary about seeing this film due to the impression that the first left on you, do not be quick to judge this film. Fifty Shades Darker is most definitely a step up and this series is one that deserves a second chance. Fifty Shades Darker in currently in theaters nationwide.
