The live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast” starring Emma Watson has been highly anticipated, taking the media by storm. Whether it be Emma’s… uh… singing, or the new release of a teaser trailer to the timeless songs on the soundtrack (Josh Groban amirite), this tale as old as time has been reeling us all in. And to top it all off, this classic story will now be featuring a bit of a twist: a gay romance.
Gaston’s sidekick, the one and only Lefou, is literally always at Gaston’s side. The poor guy depicted in the classic movie is always seen scrambling around frantically for whatever Gaston needs. It may be to boost his confidence, to sing alongside him as backup vocals or anything in between, but now it could be to check out his backside. Director Bill Condon told Attitude magazine that, “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.” A crush we can all think of right now that we’ve had. And what a conflict, considering how much he’s around Gaston. So while Belle is pushing Gaston away, maybe it will push him in Lefou’s direction. Condon said that while he will not spoil how the relationship or lack thereof could end, he comments, “it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Disney has had other subtle appearances of homosexual relationships such as a gay couple walking on the beach in “Finding Dory” and other miscellaneous TV shows and films, but this will be the first time that a blatant action will be presented on the big screen. This is a bold move for Disney, projecting a bit of a socially present and forward plotline that aligns with how society has been evolving. However, it’s a big move that has stirred some controversy, resulting in a theatre in Alabama announcing that it will not be screening “Beauty and the Beast” due to this newfound information.
At this point, I think it’s safe to say that this live-action remake will definitely have the audience on the edge of their seats, a tale that is as old and as new as time.
