9 Struggles Of Dealing With Spring Weather In Iowa

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

The first time I heard, “If you don’t like the weather in Iowa, wait five minutes,” I had only been in this state for a few days. I’ve now heard it more times than I can count and have begun to say it myself! I’ve been thinking about this saying a lot lately because if there’s a season that’s even more unpredictable than all the rest, it’s spring! These are nine problems I’m sure everyone who attends college in Iowa, or in the Midwest in general, has had at some point during the spring.

1. You debate whether to wear that cute, lightweight spring outfit purely for the #aesthetic or to wear 67,492,057,295 layers to stay warm.

2. On ridiculously warm days, your lectures are even more miserable than usual because the heat hasn’t been turned off yet.

3. When the tornado siren goes off, you’re not sure if they’re just testing it again or if you actually need to seek shelter.

4. Your professor wants to hold class outside in March because they think the 50 F weather will make everyone more alert this morning… um, no?!

5. You experience all four seasons IN ONE WEEK.

6. You’ve experienced way too many gorgeous sunny mornings that look like 60 F but are actually -6 F.

7. You’re not sure if you should be worried about global warming or if this is just the usual Midwestern spring chaos.

8. You’re not sure if it’s safe to pack up your coats, hats, scarves, gloves and boots or if you will need them tomorrow on your walk to class.

9. People don’t believe you when you say the weather is messed up

Now that the official first day of spring has come and gone, the weather might become warmer… or it might not! Life in the Midwest can feel somewhat chaotic at times because of the weather, but we can always hope for bright sunny mornings, afternoons filled with blue skies and pretty sunsets, can’t we?!
