Ten Unique Food Items To Buy For Your Dorm Room

Ten Unique Dorm Room Foods You Might Not Have Thought About

The reality of living in a college dorm is that the list of food to store is limited to what is non-parishable and, in some cases, what can be cooked in the microwave. Obviously, every college student has filled their room with granola bars, jars of peanut butter, and bags of chips among other similar items. And, just as it can start to feel old eating at the dining hall every day, it can also start feeling old to eat the same dorm room foods every day. So, to add some variety, here’s a brief list of ten unique items to add to your stash of food when you feel like eating something new.

Crackers and Spreadable Cheese

While it’s rather common to bring cheese sticks to college, a good way to get a different kind of cheese fix is to purchase some crackers and cheese spread. There are all sorts of cheese spreads available, from simple cheddar cheese to herb cheese. There’s a cheese for everyone.

Dried Fruit

Let’s face it; it can be hard to keep a lot of fruit on hand in a dorm room aside from fruit cups or apple juice. The solution for your fruit cravings? Dried fruit! To be fair, dried fruit isn’t exactly healthier than fresh, un-dried fruit, but keeping a small supply of dried mango or banana chips on hand can help spruce up your snack choices.

Soft Pretzels

Yes; you can keep soft pretzels in your freezer and warm them up in the microwave. With salt.

Enough said.

Dried Peas

Hear me out on this one.

In the past few years, edemame crisps have grown a lot in popularity. So, if you’re a fan of those, you’re going to love dried peas. And, if you haven’t had the pleasure of trying either, I highly suggest you do. They are addicting, though.

Tea Candies

Aside from the occasional cough drop, nobody really owns lozenges anymore, which is a shame, since they’re really cute little craving fixers. I personally keep a bag of peppermints in my room, but for those of you who are big tea fanatics, I’d highly recomed buying yourself a bag of tea candies. These little lozenges come in a few flavors of tea, and are real easy to carry around with you in-between classes. Just don’t get too addicted.

S’mores Supplies

While it’s never a bad idea to keep marshmallows, graham crackers, or chocolate bars on hand, having all three stored in your dorm room can lead to microwavable s’mores. Just pop them in for ten seconds and dig in!

Cookie Butter

For those of you who have never been fortunate enough to go to Trader Joe’s, do yourself a favor and try to seek one out and look around at all of their amazing products. However, if you can’t get to a Trader Joe’s, I still insist on ordering yourself a jar of cookie butter. Cookie butter is the same consistency of peanut butter, only instead of peanuts, it’s delicious buttery cinnamon cookies. Think spreadable Teddy Grahams.

Rice Cakes

An old staple, but a good one. Rice cakes hardly ever go bad, are easy to find, and make a super quick breakfast or snack. Pick up a pack.

Popcicles/Mochi Ice Cream

It’s always tricky to find things to fill the freezer. Tubs of ice cream are usually too big to keep over a long time. Still, if you must get your frozen-sweet-treat fix, I’d consider buying a box of popcicles or freeze pops. If you still want your ice cream, though, I’d suggest maybe getting some mochi ice cream (little dollaps of ice cream in a gummy rice wrapping), which are just small enough to keep in your mini-fridge.

Biscotti

The only cookie that’s acceptable to eat for breakfast, Biscotti are easy to grab and even easier to eat. You can have it with coffee, or you can thorw it in your bag for later. They come in a variety of flavors, from lemon to almond to double-chocolate. There’s a biscotti flavor for everyone.
