5 Must See Art Exhibitions this Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Art is everywhere, and fun art exhibitions are bound to be near you no matter what city you live in! So far 2017 has been a blessing in the arts department, showcasing extraordinary exhibits from classic to modern art. So next time you’re looking for something to do on the weekend or on vacation, check out a museum and #SupportTheArts!

Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.) – Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors

Yayoi Kusama is legendary when it comes to infinity mirrors. This exhibit is in honor of the Japanese artist’s 65 year career, and includes six of Kusama’s enchanting Infinity Mirror Rooms, and the U.S. debut of her latest series, My Eternal Soul.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA) – Matisse and Diebenkorn

What better way to celebrate spring than to immerse yourself in the pastels of Matisse and Diebenkorn? At SFMOMA this spring, their exhibition on Henri Matisse and Richard Diebenkorn will illuminate the connections between these two remarkable 20th century artists, and explore the inspiration Deibenkorn found within the masterpieces of Matisse.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, NY) – Doug Wheeler: PSAD Synthetic Desert III

Optical illusions seem to be all the rage in 2017, but we aren’t complaining. In Wheeler’s PSAD Synthetic Desert III (1971), he creates a “semi-anechoic chamber” within one of the galleries. The artist changes the feeling of light and sound to resemble the grandeur of the Arizona desert.

LACMA (Los Angeles, CA) – James Turrell, Breathing Light

This exciting exhibition, Breathing Light, plays with your depth perception, immersing you into a world of color.

Dallas Museum of Art (Dallas, TX) – Young Masters 2017

This current exhibition at the DMA showcases the work of AP fine art students from Dallas high schools. So go out and support your local arts (admission is free)!
