5 Books to Read Over the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

With the spring holidays just around the corner it’s the perfect time to start tackling that reading list (between catching up on that uni reading of course). So whether you’re jetting off to a far exotic land or just hanging at home here are a few must reads:

The Vintage Girl’s Guide to Love and Romance – Kirsty Greenwood

This novel follows Jessica Beam, a twenty-something singleton who loves to party and drink pear cider, but when she finds herself out of a job and homeless she sets out to find her long lost grandmother, Matilda Beam. Unlike her granddaughter, Matilda Beam is the epitome of a demure 1950s lady, but things aren’t going so well for her either. With her “Good Woman” guide books out of print, she’s fallen far behind on her mortgage repayments and is on the verge of being evicted. Desperate for some money, the unlikely duo take on a prospective publishing deal of rejuvenating Matilda’s “Good Woman” guide books by transforming Jessica into a vintage lady and having her capture the heart of a notorious bachelor.

I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World – Eve Ensler

Eve Ensler, author of the Vagina Monologues and founder of V-Day is back with a serious of fictional monologues and stories inspired by young women around the world. Each monologue is inspired by Eve’s travels around the world and is a look at the inner lives of girls and the challenges the face growing up. It covers a mosaic of issues from stories of young women in America to Egypt to China and across the globe.

Half Bad – Sally Green

Nathan is a half blood; the son of a white witch and the most feared black witch in existence. To other white witches, Nathan is an abomination and something to be feared which is why at 14 is locked away in a cage. His only chance of surviving is to escape, find his father and receive three gifts that will bring magical powers before his 17th birthday. But with the clock ticking and no one to trust, finding his father might be too difficult a task.

Milk and Honey – Rupi Kaur

Milk and Honey is a poetry book divided into four chapters; the hurting, the loving, the breaking, the healing. Accompanied by Rupi’s sketches, her poetry moves through some of life’s most difficult moments and looks not only at the emotions we feel during those times but also how we come out of them and heal.

Is it Just Me? – Miranda Hart

In “Is it Just Me?” Queen of Comedy Miranda Hart sets out to deliver a sort of manual to life where she looks at how to navigate the embarrassing and awkward moments of adulthood. While it can sometimes feel like you’re the only struggling to figure it out this book can absolutely reassure you that you are not alone.
