10 Reasons Why Being The Oldest Sibling is the Worst

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Being the oldest is a gift and a curse, sometimes you have the upper hand and sometimes you will lose every argument. Some days are clear sunny blue skies, and the majority of the days feel like a rainstorm brewing in the clouds just for you as the oldest kid. We are expected to uphold high expectations and set an example to our younger siblings, no one knows that sometimes it gets lonely being at the top, but hey let us take a moment and reflect on the reasons why we are the people we are today for better or for worse.

1.  Your Parents Were/Are Extra Strict With You

You always got hammered with the: Who? Where? When? Then you were called every 10 minutes just to make sure you were actually where you said you’d be…but your siblings they get asked when they’re getting home, not even a curfew! Do your parents just care about you more…?

2. Everything Is Your Fault

Whether you did it or not you were at fault it didn’t help either when your younger siblings were snickering in the background…but we always got payback.

3. You Have To Set An Example

You have to  live up to certain expectations, because God-forbid your younger siblings follow your path if you go astray.

4. You’re Suppose To Be The Bigger Person

Let’s be honest, most of the time our younger siblings were asking for it and if anything it we fought back in self defense.

5. You’re The Guinea Pig Forever

Our parents method of helping us grow was a technique they called “trail and error” we were sent out to the wolves, very little scares us at this point.

6. You Have To Share Everything

And by everything unfortunately that means everything from your clothes, shoes, food, phone, the list goes on and on however it may have gotten worse throughout the time since sharing has gone to stealing. How dare they!

7. You Have To Pay Your Way Out

We’ve been strong, independant individuals for awhile now, but we’re still kids at heart and indulge in free stuff, but don’t look to your parents for a freebie in anything, you’re on your own kid. Your younger sibling however can have the money for their car gas or rental, damn favortism.

8. Your Younger Sibiling Bullies You

First of all, how dare they? And second of all, please. When it comes to people being salty AF with you or even trying to remotely roast you, they are unprepared for the thick layer of skin and stone cold heart we’ve built due to the many years where our dignity and pride have been stabbed by the demons that are our younger siblings.

9. Your Parents Will Never Understand You

Okay, so “never” is maybe too strong, but our issues, dubts, concerns are different to what our parents dealt with in their youth and they always defend their decisions, opinions, beliefs with “you’ll understand when you’re my age.” And maybe someday we’ll be able to have a good communication with our parents and understand the reasons behind why most of time we were fighting to defend ourselves against the forces of evil that are our younger siblings.

10. You’re On Your Own

You alone must pave the way for those who will follow you, and it is up to you to lead them to dark or light side, to join the empire or rebel alliance, to join the good or the bad. Ultimatley wherever they go they should know they have a great leader guiding them, who isn’t afraid to face the challanges life throws at them.

Whether your younger siblings admits it or not they were blessed with an amazing, awesome, cool older sibiling who despite everything, will deal with their sh!t because we love them and know if anyone is going to teach them the ways of life, it is us today, tomorrow and always.
