City Series: Munich, Germany

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Strath chapter.

For a flavor of traditional German nostalgia, nowhere is better than Munich – the heart of Southern Germany. With architecture resonating something of a fairytale, the idyllic city poses a pleasant contrast the German capital and serves as the perfect location for a relaxing getaway

Where to visit…

Marienplatz can be best described as Munich’s George Square equivalent. This central square is home to the city’s main hall and is easily accessed by both S-Bahn and U-Bahn transport links. The vast number of shops and restaurants make it the perfect place to spend the afternoon immersed in Bavarian culture.

Where to eat…

Biergarten Viktualienmarkt! Many would think that failure to visit at least one beer garden while in Germany is illegal. Certainly, in the case of Munich, the overwhelming selection of outdoor locations to relax and enjoy a beer in the sun make them very difficult to avoid. Situated in the center of the stunning English Garden, Biergarten Viktualienmarkt offers a welcoming environment enjoyed by a mixture of locals and tourists. As well as a host of German beers, there is a variety of delicious traditional food on offer making it an ideal location to soak up some culture.

Where to drink…

Gamsei! For a shift away from the traditional beer-town reputation of Munich, Gamsei Bar is a stylish cocktail lounge dedicated to using locally sourced ingredients, often from surrounding farms, in its drinks. This small open-plan lounge starkly opposes the sprawling beer halls, which dominate the city’s drinking culture. However, what it lacks in size, Gamsei more than makes up in creativity and you are guaranteed to find something to your taste on the menu.

I'm Marjorie, studying towards a BA Hons Degree in International Business. I have always lived in Glasgow and love what it has to offer in terms of shopping, restaurants and nightlife! In September 2016, I embarked on my international exchange to Milan, Italy for 4 months which I absolutely loved!! Studying abroad allowed me to meet some lovely new friends, taste delicious food and visit beautiful lakes and cities nearby. I love going out with friends, getting dressed up, trying new things and meeting new people!
