Tips for the Girl Who is Always Late

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Some people always show up early or on time, fully ready for whatever activity they are taking part in. Whether it’s class, work or just hanging out with friends, many people are able to show up prepared and punctual. They already have their life together. They don’t need to read tips on how to function. If you are not this girl; if you struggle to get out the door five minutes after you needed to leave, then these tips are for you.

Make a schedule you can work with

Set yourself up for success from the get-go. If you don’t do mornings well then avoid them! Try for afternoon classes or evening work shifts. Whatever time of the day you are most awake and productive is what you should be working with.

Set out what you need the night before

Setting out your clothes and necessities like books and keys can save up to 10 or 15 minutes. And anyone who constantly arrives late knows every minute counts. Plus, extra minutes means extra sleep in the morning. Just don’t abuse that luxury or the minutes saved will be pointless.

Set alarms for everything

Sure, everyone sets alarms to wake up, but those of us who need reminders to get up and go need more. Have a break between classes? A meeting in the evening? Set an alarm for when you need to get ready to go.

Get a routine

If you can find a routine for yourself, you will get used to being places at a certain time and get better at arriving on time. Also, you will get used to how long it takes you to do things like getting dressed and do your hair or switch books between classes. This will help you plan your time better.

Find a buddy

Having someone help keep you on time and on task is really helpful. When I have someone relying on me or keeping me accountable to be on time to things, I usually do better. This person could be a friend who you go to everything with or just someone to text you and remind you to get it together. Surrounding yourself with punctual friends will help a lot.

None of these are foolproof, of course. But every little bit helps! The fewer eye rolls you get from your friends and classmates for being constantly late, the better.
