Humans of Duke: Sarah Turner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Name: Sarah Turner

Major: Psychology and History

Year: 2018

Hometown: LaFayette, GA

1. Why did you join Her Campus?

It was my freshman year activities fair, and I was completely overwhelmed with the hundreds of booths scattered across the East Campus quad. Tbh I walked to the Her Campus table because I saw free tanks, but after hearing about what they did, I couldn’t help but go to the interest meeting to learn more. I loved the idea of having an empowering group of women to learn from and write with, and so I joined. Three years later, I have no regrets!

2. What do you miss the most about your hometown?

Definitely a mixture of the familiarity of growing up in a small town, and the incredible views. Plus, my overweight beagle.*

3. What’s the best part about this time of year?

Everything is so bitter sweet because you know that the semester is almost over meaning that papers and exams are moving aside for exciting summer plans (unintentional rhyming is my specialty), but at the same time, some of your best friends will be graduating and moving away. For me it makes April a really special time, and helps me to stay on top of my work, so I have plenty of time to make a few more memories with my favorite seniors!

4. What the worst part about this time of the year?

It’s a tie between inch worms and Pfrosh

5. What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

Reading Cosmo’s snapchat story while shamelessly watching Vampire Diaries reruns

6. How have you changed since freshman year?

I think I’ve definitely settled in here. It was weird at first trying to find a balance between school and friends and work and trying to keep up with people from home and also trying to sleep, but I feel like the longer I’m at Duke, the easier it gets.

7. Chipotle or Moe’s?

Moe’s. Why you ask? One word: queso

8. Who has been the greatest influence in your life?

100% my sister (hi Hannah). Since day one, I’ve been extremely lucky to have been born just a few years after one of the greatest people I know, and even luckier that we’ve stayed best friends since. If it weren’t for her constant encouragement pushing me to do more, I don’t think I would be at Duke today.

9. What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekends?

I love splurging on a bougie af WA Duke trip. Nothing beats feigning fanciness, sipping tea and eating finger sandwiches all the while pretending it’s your birthday to get a free dessert.

10. What made you choose your major?

I knew I wanted to pursue law long term, so I came in with flexibility to major in whatever I was passionate about—Psych. History came out of the blue when I had to declare my major and realized that I only would need a few more classes to get it.
