Good ole Bangers. Every Hofstra student’s favorite (or least favorite) hole in the wall, Bangers will always be fondly remembered for its overwhelming scent of stale alcohol, the bar fights (before they get broken up by the security guards), and the hoardes of sorority girls in matching shirts shouting the lyrics to their favorite songs. It has seen many good times, bad times and even times that nobody will remember at all. Whether you’ve only attended one happy hour at Bangers or you haven’t missed one since September, chances are you’ve found yourself asking these questions at some point during your time there:
1. Why is the floor so sticky?
The one question we avoid thinking about all night… nothing kills a good mood like wondering what you’re stepping in and why it’s making noises every time you pick up your feet. With all of the drinks spilled there night after night, it’s a surprise your shoes don’t get permanently stuck to the dancefloor.
2. Who are all of these people?
One word: locals. It’s easy to forget that Bangers isn’t just a Hofstra hot spot. Especially if you frequent the bar on Thursdays and Saturdays, you’re bound to be overwhelmed by all of the unfamiliar faces at some point.
3. Whose hand is that…?
Being a college bar means college guys are constantly on the prowl. Beware turning your back on a crowd of sketchy guys, because before you know it one of them might decide to get a little too friendly.
4. How can I get through this bathroom line the quickest?
The Bangers bathroom might as well be known as the place of no return. Better bring a friend, because that line will last so long that by the time you make it to a stall you’ll forget the whole reason you were there in the first place.
5. Where did all of my friends go?
If you’ve been to Bangers, chances are you’ve had that moment of panic, looking around and realizing that the friends you came with are nowhere to be found in the crowd. How can such a small bar have so many places to get lost?
6. Christmas in April?
The Bangers’ DJs are known for spinning some of the strangest tracks, especially early on in the night. From Frozen’s “Let it Go” to the opening song from “The Lion King”, you’ll have to learn to dance to pretty much anything. And let’s not forget the timeless classic, “All I Want for Christmas is You”- no matter what time of year it is, it’s always Christmas at Bangers.
7. Why didn’t I wear shorts?
Even in the middle of winter, you’ll most likely regret wearing jeans to the bar. Being such a small space full of sweaty, dancing college kids, it heats up faster than a sauna in there.
8. It’s 2 a.m. already?
We may think of Bangers as our dingy, dirty, little college bar, but we’ve all made so many memories there that it holds a special place in our heart. Nights where they turn the lights on and start cleaning up before you’re ready never fail to give you a sense of accomplishment, sadness or maybe even embarrassment. But no matter what feelings you have leaving the bar at 2 am, we all know you’ll be back again next week.
If you haven’t been to Bangers yet, it’s definitely an item to check off the bucket list. Just be sure not to be surprised if half of your night is spent in the bathroom line or tracking down your lost friends.
