Why Joining a Sorority Changed My Life for the Better

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Sororities and Greek Life in general usually get a bad rep. Those who are not a part of a fraternity or a sorority usually assume that all they do is party and pay for all of their friends. Although both might be true to an extent, there is so much more to Greek Life.

Yes, you do pay to be a part of a sorority, and you do make friends out of being a member; however, you are not “paying for your friends.” Each and every member of Greek Life then becomes a part of philanthropy and service events, formals, date nights, getting super cute t-shirts (almost too many to count), and each one comes together during good and bad times all across Greek Row.

I joined a sorority because it was perfect for networking. Not just within my own sorority, but through all of the sororities at my university. My little, my big, my best friends have all received jobs and internships through other sisters in and outside of their own house. Not only is it perfect for job networking, you also find yourself with new sisters across the country. I was in Fort Lauderdale during spring break when ran into a fellow sister who went to school in Alabama. The fact that we instantly felt connected through our ties to our sorority reminded me just how impactful being a part of one really is.

Philanthropy and service are also a huge part of being in a sorority. I have been a part of working with the American Heart Association and the Food Bank. Nothing is more rewarding than making a difference for someone else, even if it is just by putting in a few hours of service. Being in a sorority has pushed me to be the best version of myself and want to grow each and every day.

My confidence has skyrocketed and I feel so empowered as a woman in a sorority. We work to be leaders and scholars and we have our sisters by our side through the good times and the bad times to watch us grow and help us to become better.

If I had not joined a sorority, I know that I would not be the person I am today. I would not have found my future bridesmaids, had the opportunity to receive my amazing internship, made all the connections and friendships that I have, grown as a person, and would not have been lucky enough to be a part of something that is much bigger than myself.

Going Greek was the best decision that I have made in my college career. If you are a freshman or even a junior, I highly encourage you to consider it. You never know what you might learn and who you might meet. Push yourself to try new things and you will be shocked at what you are capable of. Being in a sorority reminds me of this every day as I am surrounded by women of all different chapters who are extraordinary as individuals and as sisters.
