It’s getting to be that time of the year again when it seems like everyone on campus is getting sick. Red puffy eyes are ubiquitous and lecture halls are plagued with the inescapable coughing. Now is the time more than ever to make sure we are taking care of ourselves. Here are a few tips to help you survive the oncoming cold and flu season.

  1. Wash your hands every chance you get: On a college campus, students are in close contact with each other all day touch doors, railings, counters, and desk. Do yourself a favor and wash your hands to keep from catching something contagious.
  2. Avoid sharing food and drink: You never know who is getting sick and you don’t want risk being in too close of contact with someone who may be getting sick or is already sick.
  3. Take your vitamins: Give your body the tools it needs to fight off illnesses by taking supplements like Vitamin C and zinc. If you are already feeling like you’re getting sick, try taking Echinacea tablets, Emergen-C powder, or Airborne.
  4. Look after yourself: Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, drinking lots of water and having a balanced diet. Take warm showers and keep your surroundings clean. A healthy body is harder to infiltrate.
  5. Make a plan: Even with the best preparation, sickness can still creep up on a person, and if that happens you’ll want to be prepared. Stock-up on soup and tea so you already have it on hand if you get sick. If you have to miss class refresh yourself on your campus’ absence policy and plan accordingly. Also, make sure there is someone in class who will take notes for you while you’re gone.
