Wonder is a beautiful book about a little boy who has a facial deformity. It discusses his experiences in a public school. Auggie knows the feeling of people always staring. When in school, the other kids give him horrible nicknames. RJ Palacio beautifully depicts this little boy’s battle to be seen as normal in a world that doesn’t understand him. Wonder illustrates the need for understanding and acceptance when it comes to dealing with those that are different from us. This novel is a must read because it not only shows how Auggie dealt with the struggles of public school, but also how the people he interacted with were changed as a result. This book shows the power of love and the courage of a child.
This book is very close to my heart because I work at a school for young adults with disabilities. I see the importance of acceptance every day with my students. While it may appear that there are a lot of differences between us, there are actually more similarities. People are people. We all have the same wants and desires. Even though people may seem different, we should all take the time to get to know them for their heart. I learn so much from my students every day, and I would not be the same person without them.
