Omg fall! Big chunky sweaters, scarves, boots, pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider and tons of layers! Okay, so maybe that’s not the reality for us living in Los Angeles when the weather never seems to cool down. A Chicago native I found my first semester without fall to be extremely difficult. Especially when fall is quite possibly the best time of year and I had a desire to celebrate the season appropriately. For all my Los Angeles ladies here are some my tips for dressing for fall, without the chilly weather.

Booties over boots

Obviously fall screams boots, but in LA it’s not always easy to wear something that covers your entire leg. Opt for booties instead! They’re still just as fun for fall as regular boots are, but don’t keep your legs sweating in the heat.

Fall colors

This is one of the best ways to get in the spirit of fall, without having to bundle up. Wear your favorite autumnal colors like pumpkin, camel, olive green, mustard and brown. This way you don’t have to throw on a bulky sweater in the Los Angeles sun, but can still represent the best season of the year.

Sleeveless sweaters

Sometimes the LA weather does permit bulky sweaters and we all rejoice! But, typically short sleeve or sleeveless sweaters are your best bet. You’re still dressing for fall and have the comfort of a cozy sweater, but without the added warmth.

Choose one warm piece

The reality of LA is that you can’t wear jeans, a sweater and boots without sweating your butt off. Because of this reality, choose a specific piece like a chunky sweater, or over the knee boots to focus on. Then, remain cool with the other pieces of the look. If you’re bundling up with a big sweater opt for a skirt or shorts. If you’re wearing over the knee boots match these with jeans and a short sleeve tee or a skirt and short sleeve top.

Fall festivities

If all else fails and the weather is simply too hot for you to break out your favorite autumnal clothes don’t let that get you down! You can still enjoy fall by engaging in fall activities! Watch Halloweentown, drink apple cider (or if it’s too hot just apple juice) and light a pumpkin spice scented candle! Even though you’re in LA you can still visit a pumpkin patch, go apple picking (if you’re willing to drive 2+ hours) and turn on the Yuletide Log video on YouTube to create a faux fire ambiance. Enjoy the season!
