Hurricane Preparation List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Hurricane season is one of the most deadly times for people living near the coast. Hurricane season starts on June 1st and lasts until November 30th. It’s awesome that Hurricane Irma went around us, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared in case there is another one heading our way!!

What should I pack if an evacuation is needed?

  1. Food: This should consist of non-perishable items that are easy to prepare. Examples of non-perishable food would be: dry cereal, canned foods, peanut butter, and oatmeal. The rule of thumb is to plan a three-day supply per person.  Science says the human body can go three weeks without food, but I can barely make it an hour!!!
  2. Water: It is suggested to pack at least one gallon of water per person per day. Everywhere I go is starting to run out of bottled water. However, there is always Amazon.com!
  3. Flashlights: Having an extra flashlight around is always helpful, especially if there is a chance the power will go out.
  4. Battery Operated Radios: If the power goes out, you’re going to need something to keep you connected so you get any important information you need to be safe!
  5. Blankets and Pillows: Hotels along the Evacuation path may not have rooms available. I know it may not be the most comfortable option, but sometimes the car it is!!
  6. Rain Gear:  Time to get out those adorable poke-a-dot rain boots and the matching raincoat.
  7. Hygiene Products: This includes anything you need to keep yourself feeling good. Shampoo, makeup, maybe some tampons.
  8. Electronics: Better with you than at home in the house that is being torn apart. Make sure to pack that cell phone charger, because landlines might be out during the aftermath.
  9. Something to keep you occupied: This can include books, card games, and toys. If you have a child make sure you have something to keep them occupied too.
  10. Important Documents: Insurance papers, medical information, social security cards, passports, and emergency contact information of family members are all important documents you might need.
  11. First Aid Kit: Just in case. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

If you’re like me and have a furry friend at home, we need to keep them safe too! Never, leave a pet outside or alone during a hurricane! If you cannot travel with your pet there are animal hospitals that are willing to board the animal until afterward.

What should I bring for my pet?

  1. Food: The same amount is required for your pet as for you!
  2. Water: Make sure to bring water specifically for your pet.
  3. Important Documents: Make sure to bring registration and vaccination forms.
  4. First Aid Kit: For pets, it is recommended to keep flea and tick medication, cotton bandage rolls, and bandage tape.
  5. Collar, harness, leash: You don’t want to lose your pet during the evacuation!
  6. ID Tag, Rabies Tag: This goes along with the collar, harness, and leash.
  7. A Crate or Pet Carrier: If things get bad, you might need a carrier to get your little buddy out of the worst of it.
  8. A Picture of you with your pet: This can help to find the pet if you get separated during the evacuation.
  9. Sanitation: Paper towels, pet shampoo or wipes, dog bags, or clean litter.

And of course:

  1. Treats, Toys, Bedding: This is super important. It will help make your pet feel safe and more comfortable.

Hopefully we won’t have any hurricanes anytime soon, but if we do, be safe ladies!
