My mom is, and has always been, my best friend. Recently, she’s taken on the role of a cheerleader. Every morning, she sends me an inspirational quote. More often than not, she knows exactly what I need to hear before saying anything to me. I call her at least twice a week, if not more.
If I were to guess, I would say our relationship developed in earnest when I was in middle school. My father, a US Navy sailor, was deployed for most of my childhood. To relieve stress, Mom and I started to run. We trained every day for three months, and then tested ourselves by running a half marathon. Mom was there for me every step of the way, even though I would have much rather stopped running.
My relationship with my mom is more open than most. I tell her everything, mostly because she gives the best advice. In many occasions, I have asked Mom for help on behalf of other people. Last year, Mom and I called one of my friends and helped her through a tough time.
My mom is the kindest, most genuine person that I know. I aspire to be like her, in every aspect of her personality. She’s a substitute teacher, and children gravitate towards her. Well, I suppose everyone gravitates to her. She has one of those faces that give you comfort in a crowd, even if you don’t know her.
Most of our conflicts are my fault, and I’ll readily accept that blame. The most important thing that I have to remember is that she’s only looking out for me. That’s the best thing about having your mom for a best friend — you know she has no ulterior motive. Even when I’m mad, or unhappy with her, I know that she loves me with every fiber of her being.
I would encourage everyone to take a minute and shoot their mother/parental figure a text. It can’t be easy for them to have us so far away. Not every situation is the same, but I think on the whole, parents care for their children. Being far away from my mother has definitely changed our relationship in a positive way.
