What it Means to be the Designated Mom Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

The “mom friend”:  every friend group has one. She’s a necessity for a friend group to thrive. You know that friend you go to when you need life advice but don’t want to talk to an actual adult? That’s her, the mom friend. You know, the one who worries a little bit more than she needs to about her friends? That’s her, the mom friend.

Spotting the mom of a group is easy. She is usually the level headed one who knows the perfect balance to everything in life… or so she tries. She is the girl who anyone can go to with any type of problem. Even if she hasn’t had the problem herself, she probably can offer some damn good advice on how to fix it. She seems much older than everyone; she comes off as mature beyond her age.

She makes sure that everyone’s homework is done before they go out. The mom friend makes sure her friends’ success comes before their parties. Being at college means there aren’t any actual adults around to supervise. The mom friend makes sure that her friends still feel like they have a loving adult around them. She keeps everyone safe and sane.

Maybe she tracks your phone as a joke, but in reality, she really does care about your safety above all else. She always asks you to text her when you get home from a night out (she’s probably waiting up for that text). There is no doubt that when everyone is exchanging university sweatshirts, someone got her a gag gift that is a university sweatshirt with “MOM” printed under the college’s name. She definitely has a headshot or two of her friends up in her dorm somewhere. There is a good chance that the mom friend is referred to as “mom” instead of her name after a certain point.

Leadership is her number one quality. Taking charge and planning a girls night out or girls day in is her specialty. She always offers her dorm up for anyone to come to when they need to get away from something. She loves getting everyone together for a bonding experience. She also has everything a girl could ever need! She is always ready to lend out her things for a friend in need.

Everyone needs a friend who will love them unconditionally and support them with everything, and the mom friend is essential for that exact reason.
