Natural Makeup Trend: Is It For You?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

While the trend of wearing a full face of makeup is still around, lately more and more people have been showing off their skills in the no-makeup-makeup department.

You know when you were in middle school and your mom would tell you, “The key to wearing makeup is looking like you’re not wearing any at all.” Well, she would be proud of this current trend. Can you get on board with the natural look? Or do you think your makeup should be noticeable if you’re putting on makeup at all?

Even though the result is natural, there is still some work that goes into creating this no-makeup-makeup look.

Unfortunately, we can’t wake up with a rosy colored lips and orange toned eyelids. YouTube has many tutorials on how to get the glowy, “I woke up like this” face. The above tutorial, by Jessica Clements, shows how to get the look with minimal products, effort, and time. She explains this look as being, “super simple with just a little bit of definition, but still natural enough to not really look like you’re wearing that much makeup.”

Creating the above look is super easy! These are my essential products for a day I want to have a natural face. Of course, you can add or take away from this list and still get a no makeup look!

1. Becca Backlight Face Filter $38

Priming is essential and this primer is one of my favorites when I want the look of a natural glow. It looks great alone and underneath your foundation.

2. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer $6.79

Concealer is perfect for light coverage. If you don’t want the thickness of foundation weighing you down all day, some concealer in the right places can make you look awake and natural. This concealer works great and is super affordable. This concealer covers all of my tired under eyes and stress pimples without the cakiness of foundation.

3. Benefit Cheek Parade $58

Having this palette that contains bronzer, blush, and highlighter is a big must have. Everything you need to bring that glow and definition to your face is all in one spot.

4. Milani Lash Trifecta $7.99

This is my all-time favorite mascara and it’s a drugstore brand which makes it even better. It gives the natural long lashes look that go so well with a more natural face.

5. Smith’s Rosebud Salve Tube $6

This lip balm gives a soft pink glossy look to your lips. Having simple lips will tie your natural look together.

Before college I was a go-all-out kind of girl.

I woke up early to do my makeup and, to make it be known, I woke up an hour early to look that good. I applaud the college students that do that, but it isn’t for everyone. Now, between 1 a.m. study sessions and 8 a.m. classes, I need that easy way to still look good. The no-makeup-makeup routine has become my go to in the mornings when I need to feel put together without putting in all the hard work.

Are you going to give the no-makeup-makeup look a try or stick to your usual routine?
