The Entry Level Job Handbook

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

College tends to come with a heavy price tag. As a result of the poor Financial Aid system, many students seek out entry level jobs. Whether students have held a job in the past or not, they mainly look for any and all positions without considering the pros and cons of each. This can be problematic for both the employer and the student in regards to time wasted looking for a new job/ candidate. To help save you time, I’ve generated a list that describes the positive and negative characteristics of four common entry level industries.

The Restaurant Industry

If you’re considering a restaurant based job, you are probably looking at a fast food job, regular restaurant job, pizza delivery, or ice cream scooping job. This industry has a high focus on order accuracy and speed where the worst guest you deal with will yell at you for getting their order out 30 seconds too late and having their order wrong when they were the ones that ordered their meal incorrectly. The managers that will work in these jobs will most likely hate their jobs and never went to college, so they follow corporate handbooks when training and attempting to listen to your problems. You will also most likely see a whole new set of staff every six months. However, most restaurant jobs will give free food tastings on new products and fifty percent off employee orders during the days you work.

The Retail Industry

The retail industry includes small clothing boutiques, to gift shops, to corporate giants like Walmart. This industry has a high focus on organization and customer satisfaction where you may see your coworkers express mild OCD over their departments organization. The worst guest you may encounter will ask for your input, not listen to you, and try to return items they damaged themselves. The managers that work in these jobs, like the lower level employees, tend to have OCD as well, went to college for at least two years, and will follow rules by the corporate handbook… unless their OCD tells them otherwise. However, working in retail tends to come with benefits like twenty percent off products and being the first to know about upcoming sales and new products… but that also means being required to work Black Friday.

The Hotel Industry

The hotel industry is pretty self-explanatory, except for the fact there is slight differences between working in Hotels, Motels, Hostel’s, and Bed & Breakfasts. This industry has a high focus on accuracy and customer satisfaction. The average guest can vary depending on what type of hotel you work in, but the worst guest you may encounter will probably walk in being mad about the directions, the price of the room, the amenities not included, then check out saying the room condition was horrible when they were the ones that damaged it. The managers that work in these jobs tend to be college educated, and if you work in a good hotel, will take into account your suggestions for improvement to use in the future. The benefits of working in this industry are getting at least twenty percent off at company hotel’s, or even redeeming points from enrolling guests in loyalty clubs to redeem on free gift cards of your choice. However, these hotels require you to be available on all holidays of the year, including Christmas.

The Child Care Industry

Not including babysitting, this industry can range from single building childcare facilities, to midsize facilities split between two buildings of youngers and olders, to large facilities that bring staff to every school within a metropolis region for afterschool care. This industry has a high focus on organization and family satisfaction. The worst person you’d have to deal with are the parents who believe their child is an angel, which maybe deep down they are, but their child is actually the interrogator to chaos, so chaos may continue to reign as a result. The managers in this industry are occasionally college educated, but for some reason I don’t quite know yet, tend to not stay around long, nor the lower-level employees. However, your benefits in this career can range from free food, to free gym memberships, to coloring in notebooks on the job.

So whatever you end up choosing for a new job, choose wisely… may the choice be ever in your favor.
