6 Best Places on Campus for Nature Lovers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

In the midst of a bustling school year, it can be easy to lose touch with nature if you’re in the library all day. Taking some time to enjoy the outdoors can really improve your mood. Whether you’re studying, hanging out with friends, or showing your family around campus, these are the best spots to visit at Stony Brook to appreciate the environment.

1. Roth Pond

The pond at Roth Quad is one of the prettiest locations on campus. Take a Wolf Ride bike out for a spin or go for a walk around the fountains. The benches and trees can give your day a peaceful setting–before the madness of Roth Regatta every spring.

2. Simons Center Gardens

The garden next to the Simons Center and Physics Building is a hidden gem away from the busy center of campus. The tables and benches around pink General Jack roses and hydrangeas are perfect for studying in peace and quiet while enjoying the outdoors. Stop by to see the sunset between two walls of ivy for a special end to your day.

3. Staller Steps

The Staller Steps are one of the most popular spots on campus. They are great for studying, hanging out with friends, and soaking up the natural sunlight that floods its grassy expanses. When the weather is nice, the steps are the place to be.

4. Engineering QuadSurround yourself with trees while studying in the center of engineering quad. With seats in the sun or shade and views of artistic statues and rocks, spending time here will make you feel in touch with nature.

5. ESS PitHang out on the steps around the pit at Earth and Space Sciences. The trees and shrubbery in this recessed area will provide the feeling that you are relaxing in a park. The pit is a great place to connect with both friends and nature near the heart of campus.

6. Humanities Atrium

This space is different because it’s indoors but still feels like nature is upon you with the help of plants lining its walls and an open view of the sky. Studying in the quiet atrium or just enjoying its natural light can bring you closer to nature, especially if you have allergies!

If you’re looking to relax with a good book, cram for midterms in a positive setting, or simply enjoy scenery, Stony Brook has a place for everyone. Head outdoors and find your favorite spot soon!
