Dear Neighbors, Let Me Sleep

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFA chapter.

…At least on weekdays.

I’ll settle for three days out of the week. What I refuse to tolerate is the constant animal groans throughout the night. Even with my fan turned on high, university apartments do not build walls thick enough to drown the noise of my neighbor who get her walls knocked down every night at 10 p.m. like clockwork.

Some students choose to have their own apartment to avoid dealing with a roommate. However, unless he or she owns their own house, it is very likely they could experience the next worst thing: noisy neighbors.

It’s a messed up situation: one will assume they can enjoy peace and quiet until they realize they’re in for a rude awakening, Every. Single. Night.

Normally, noisy neighbors come far and few between. Unless there’s a major party happening and your neighbor happens to be in a fraternity throwing a pregame, excessive noise isn’t always an issue for most people. Unfortunately, there are those neighbors who invite their significant other over for a nightcap EVERY night. Intimacy is a common thing. Nonetheless, unless you’re a part of the act, you shouldn’t have to hear it.

It is unfortunate to know that someone somewhere right now is trying to unwind after a long day in bed. It is unfortunate to know this person is enjoying peace and quiet in their solitude until the couple next door decides to inevitably invite an audience. So instead of decompressing, this student is flooded with constant animal moans and head banging. Every now and then the language gets vulgar, the screams get louder and you can’t help but wonder, “WTF are they doing?”

No one wants to listen to sex, unless you have a fetish for that (no judgment).  Otherwise it’s rude, unethical, annoying and ultimately tasteless. Filing a noise complaint on campus or off campus is everything all too common to a university police department. In other words, after you’ve made one or two calls, if the problem is still there, the problem will remain. You might earn a few more nights in a row of peace, but the noise will always return. It always comes back harder and louder. Pun intended.

Dear neighbors,

If you are noisy neighbor there is a high chance that you are aware of the fact. Take it upon yourself to extend common courtesy by being aware that walls are generally made thin. Apartments and dorms are not made soundproof. In other words, it is easier to hear the person next door than not hear them. If the roles were to be reversed, I highly doubt you’d want to be on the receiving end. Everyone should be aware of their surroundings. Until you are prospering in life post-grad, you are simply a regular student living in a regular hall. When you own your own property, feel free to embrace enjoying the pleasure of any Fifty Shades experiments you pursue with your lover.

Sincerely,

Too Tired Student
