9 Must-Watch Scary Movies for Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Halloween is back! With it, of course, comes the craving to watch horror movies. Whether you are into supernatural, psychological thrillers or classic horror movies, here is your go-to guide of what to watch. So put away Hocus Pocus, Twitches and Halloweentown; and be ready to cuddle up with a (thick) blanket to hide behind as you watch these spine-tingly flicks!

Top 3 Supernatural Picks

1. Sinister

If you are looking to be completely terrified, Sinister is the movie for you. As this supernatural horror film unfolds, you will discover the stories behind families that got murdered. Not only does it have an intriguing plot, it will also change how you look at tire swings forever. To find out what I mean, make this your next showing at movie night!

2. The Omen

If you believe in the Devil and the power of the number 666, this is the flick for you. Whether you choose to watch the 1976 or 2006 version, this horror movie based on the son of Satan will terrify you and your girlfriends into sleeping with the lights on … for maybe a week.

3. The Sixth Sense

If you’re looking for a thrill that won’t make you lose sleep, this is the movie for you. Based on child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe, this movie follows the life of a young boy who has a dark secret that only Dr. Crowe can solve, and the consequences that unravels throughout the movie’s deep plot will keep you on your toes until the very end.

Top 3 Psychological Thriller Picks

1. The Ring

This blood-curdling psychological thriller will cause nightmares for weeks. The movie is based on a journalist who is trying to uncover the secrets of an old videotape that is killing people exactly 7 days after they watch it. It is a movie that 100% defines the word “horror.” Tip: do not watch alone.

2. The Shining

Based on a Stephen King novel, this classic psychological thriller will make you want to pack your bags and snag a plane ticket to Colorado for a night at the Stanley Hotel, where this (amazing) movie was filmed. This flick follows the story of a family that caretakes for a ski lodge in a harsh Colorado winter, and it definitely has a creepy factor that will make you reach for your night light.

3. Silence of the Lambs

Ever heard of Hannibal the Cannibal? Well, this movie was his star-studded debut. FBI agent Clarice has to enlist ex-psychologist Dr. Hannibal, who enjoyed eating his patients, in her attempt to find a serial killer who targets size-14 women. This psychological thriller will keep you glued to the screen; but hopefully, it will still let you sleep with the lights off that night.

Top 3 Classic Horror Picks

1. Friday the 13th

Oct. 13 fell on a Friday this month, so this movie is naturally the highlight classic this Halloween. The movie takes place in a cabin in the woods and follows Jason as he reeks havoc on a group of teenagers.

2. Halloween

Grab your girls and sit down for this classic horror movie that all our parents rave about. The movie sets scene on Halloween in 1963, and it will re-define what it means to be a babysitter. Michael Myers will haunt your dreams the way he did with your mom’s back in the ‘80s.

3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This gory film is not made for those with weak stomachs. The movie follows a group of friends that discovered an abandoned farmhouse with neighbors who make up a band of murderous outcasts — they wear human skin masks and use their chainsaws to dismember anyone who gets in their way. This classic 1974 film will give you the shivers every time you hear a chainsaw — or even a noise that resembles one.

Now that you are in-the-know of what to watch this October, grab your girlfriends, get the popcorn going, and snuggle in for a night of scares!
