7 Broadway Stars That Need To Host SNL

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

As an avid SNL viewer and passionate theatre fan, I am always thinking about which of Broadway’s biggest stars should be the next SNL host. Lin Manuel Miranda killed it when he hosted last fall, and I think it’s about time for another star of the Great White Way to tackle hosting duties. Check which stars I think should host SNL next!

1. Ben Platt

You either know him as loveable Benji from the Pitch Perfect films, or as Evan Hansen in the smash musical Dear Evan Hansen. He has the combination of comedic timing and endearing personality that makes for the perfect host. Bonus: He could also double as the musical guest when he releases his solo album!

2. Brandon Uranowitz

While he might not be known in the mainstream pop culture scene, Uranowitz has taken Broadway by storm over the past few years, starring in An American in Paris and Falsettos! He would excel at playing all kinds of kooky characters, and would surely help create some memorable sketches.

3. Laura Benanti

If you are not following Laura Benanti on social media, you need to start now. This hilarious actress, known for her work in musicals such as She Loves Me, and TV shows like Supergirl, would be perfect for topical, current event sketches (She does a fantastic Melania Trump impression).

4. Beanie Feldstein

Feldstein may be one of the lesser known names on this list, but she is a rising star for sure. She got her start in the film Neighbors 2, she is currently starring with Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly!, and has a scene-stealing role in the upcoming film Lady Bird. With her comedic experience, I think Feldstein would bring the comedy, a la Melissa McCarthy.

5. Alex Brightman

Alex Brightman was nominated for a Tony in 2016 for his role as Dewey Finn in School of Rock: The Musical. His passion, energy, and willingness to try anything would make for an entertaining episode.

6. Christian Borle

Christian Borle is equal part dramatic actor and comedic actor. This combination would make him perfect for taped sketches, like Ryan Gosling’s terrific turn in “Papyrus.”

7. Sutton Foster

She can sing. She can dance. She can act. She’s hilarious. Sutton Foster would be the perfect fit to do a musical parody with the ladies of SNL
