College Relationships: How to Make Long Distance Work

Do Little Things for Each Other Even When You’re Apart

Sending surprise gifts or even a letter, can make your partner’s day. It can be homemade cute things like a photo album, or even a gift basket of their favorite things. No matter what you chose, it will put a smile on their face.

  1. Keep in Contact

Always be sure to let them know you’re thinking about them, and love them even if you’re having a busy day and you can only send a couple messages. Make those couple messages count, because it will make them feel comforted and loved.

  1. Talk About Happy Things

It can be easy to get into arguments when you aren’t around each other so try to keep everything you talk about happy, and light. Instead of discussing all your problems to your loved one, vent it out to a friend. The constant sadness or frustration will only strain your relationship, and the texting may stop being fun.

  1. Make Future Plans

Making plans to look forward to with your boo will help so that when you miss them you can think of all the fun to come. Whether it’s getting dinner at your favorite restaurant, or buying tickets to an event, you will be able to share the excitement with your partner.

  1. Keep Yourself Busy and Involved

You are going to want a lot of girls nights, club activities, and fun plans to keep you distracted and happy. It gives you more things to be invested in, instead of just focusing on your relationship. Plus it will give you fun stories to tell your love.

  1. Trust Each Other

Jealousy can be a major problem, so make sure that before starting a long distance relationship that you have a solid trust with your partner. It is important that both of you encourage each other to go out, have fun, and make friends! Holding your partner back from those things, is only going to create problems and that is not a healthy relationship.

  1. Facetime and Call

Find times that work for both of you to call or facetime each other, because seeing their face and hearing their voice is something that will make your day. After a while you simply miss just being able to see them and facetime is a perfect way to connect with each other.

  1. Spice it Up Every Once in Awhile

This might not be for everyone, but it can be very fun. Get wild and send some risky texts! Whether it is a hot pic or a couple intimate texts, keep your bae wanting more. Tell them what exactly you miss about them and what you can’t wait to do when you meet again.

  1. Set Boundaries and Expectations

Make sure you know exactly what each other are comfortable with, so you can be respectful of each other’s wishes. This involves compromise and trust as well, but it’s key in keeping your relationship healthy.

  1. Stay positive!

This one might seem obvious but it can be so hard some days when all you want to do is cuddle up with your best friend. This is when you have to think of all the fun times you have had with each other, and the many more to come. Remind yourself that you will see them soon enough and you can even set a countdown on your phone if it helps. This is a time to be independent as well, follow your passions, and be the best you can be.
