The hit Netflix Original Series has been cancelled after a six season run following assault allegations towards leading man, Kevin Spacey.
Spacey played the conniving and ambitious Frank Underwood, a Democratic congressman from South Carolina with White House ambitions. After being snubbed for the position of Secretary of State, Frank goes on the warpath with his wife, Claire, to take what he wants and gain power. Over the course of six seasons, Frank butchers and defames his way to the top, taking no prisoners.
According to ABC News, the decision to end the show had been made several months ago, but the announcement was moved up following the interview where Anthony Rapp (Star Trek: Discovery) accused Spacey of sexually assaulting him when he was fourteen and Spacey was twenty six following a celebratory party at Spacey’s Manhattan apartment. He was motivated to come forward because of the positive reaction and progressive movement following the Harvey Weinstein scandals. Netflix said that they were ‘deeply troubled’ by the allegations, and a former show runner (or season plot creator) stated that he hadn’t seen any behavior that would hint at such previous and criminal behavior.
The political thriller has been received across all seasons with excellent reviews, lauded for it’s character creation, plot twists, and cinematography. It has been awarded six Emmys and nominated for fifty three Emmys over the course of it’s run. Over the course of six seasons, it has helped establish Netflix as a legitimate film studio and become engrained in the American vernacular.
A few articles have claimed that there is a spinoff in the works, but there is no official confirmation.
