Darling you are a Mountain

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

Another month has come and gone. Another week, another day, another hour. Was it fleeting for you? Or did you take on the Carpe Diem mantra and live each day to the fullest? Regardless of the answer, a reminder needs to be made.

It’s been said that life is like a piece of paper. Looking at yourself introspectively, think of what’s bothering you most right now. Personally, not nationally, globally, or universally; think of yourself, and the issues you wake up to every morning. Take this time, whether it be a few seconds, minutes, or hours, to be selfish in the miniscule struggles nobody else can see. Narrow in on one thing, and blow it up. Make it your entire world for two seconds. Why is this bothering you? Is it hindering you from growing into the best version of yourself? Is it eating away at the smallest corners of your mind, and changing the fundamental characteristics of who you are? Exploit these questions, and absorb every answer. Let yourself spill over the barely put-together image you’ve nurtured.

You’ve laid yourself bare for yourself to see. Now look back to the piece of paper. Take a pen, and gently place the tip right in the middle. For every vulnerability you’ve tucked away, make another dot. Gently, ever so gently, mark this piece of paper, each representing a trial you’ve yet to, or have already overcome. How much white space is left? That dot, that struggle that has festered in your brain is but a small part of the rest of your life. It’s easy to say that when it’s on paper right? When it’s not your problem advice is easy to give. It’s simple to chalk it up to meaningless words.

It’s also easy to forget you have a choice.

Decisions are intimidating, and the weak can’t make them for themselves. Do not mistake fear for lack of strength. Being scared is crucial, because without fear there is no courage. Individuals resemble mountains; they’re beautiful on the outside, with a rocky wall hiding their innermost secrets and emotions. Darling you are a mountain. You are capable of choosing how jagged your walls are, and how they affect your individuality. The selfish struggles you’re afraid to explore, either because you think you lack the strength, or you think they’re nothing in comparison to the rest of the world, will always be present. It isn’t a question of strength, it’s a matter of bravery. Are you brave enough to let yourself be unsteady, and then brave enough to do something about it?

Life is short, but the days are long. Each is an opportunity, but more than that it’s a choice. Don’t let the hours fly without color in every second. Break down, find perspective, be brave, and then make the choice.

I'm a sophomore attending CU Boulder majoring in English, with a focus on creative writing. Crafting fiction fanatsy is my passion, but I thoroughly enjoy every form of the written word. Reading, film, and painting are also a few things I engage in for fun. Outside of school I work as a barista at Starbucks, and gymnastics coach to children of various ages.
