Student-Athlete Spotlight: Kristin Thewes

You’ll find her in The Mitchell Center at Denison. She’s either taking control of the Livingston Gym, getting a lift in, dominating all types of intramural sports, taping ankles in the Athletic Trainer’s room, or studying up on physical medicine, exercise science and sporting culture theory.

Kristin Thewes. The four-year letter-winner for varsity volleyball has played in 406 sets across 109 matches in her college career. She’s tallied 1980 career digs, 218 serving aces and 91 assists.

“I play sports because my parents forced me to when I was younger even though I wanted to be a ballerina,” Thewes said.

Thank God Karen and Scott pushed her into sports or else she would have never been named the NCAC Libero of the Year, her senior year. Thewes was also named to the all NCAC Honorable Mention team her junior and senior seasons.

The Texas native came all the way to Denison because she believes that, “Denison is the perfect balance between academics, sports, and a social life,” Thewes said.

When she’s not doin’ her thang on the court, she spends her time studying classes for Denison’s new Health, Exercise and Sports Studies (HESS) major. She plans to go to nursing school after graduation.

She has a passion for music. This year she even found a new passion for the genre of Jazz after taking Music 102: Introduction to Music: Jazz. She’s a big fan of Take Five by Dave Brubeck, Manteca and Salt Peanuts by Dizzy Gillespie.

Now that the volleyball season has ended she plans on completing a juice cleanse, getting into cross-fit and preparing for life after graduation. Although the season is over, her collegiate volleyball career isn’t over yet.

“I can’t wait to tear it up in intramural indoor and sand volleyball,” Thewes said.

Kathlyn Craigie is just a California girl living in an Ohio world. As a senior at Denison University, Kathlyn enjoys being part of the varsity volleyball team, traveling abroad, and cherishing the remaining time she has left on The Hill.
