Inspirational Poets That Are a Must Read

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Personally, I wasn’t a big fan of poetry until my senior year of high school. I realized that poetry has pure and beautiful language that I can easily connect to. So for those poetry lovers out there, or someone who’s new to the genre, here are some of my favorite poets that are must reads.

Rupi Kaur

Rupi Kaur is a super talented written poet and spoken word performer from Canada. One of her popular books is “Milk and Honey.” I felt that “Milk and Honey” is a very thought provoking and almost upsetting group of poems, with a hint of inspiration. The whole book talks about a woman who was sexually abused as a child and adult, and how that changed her perspective of men and the world itself. It contains heavy content, but it gave me awareness to the struggles of sexual abuse and also the power of femininity. Her new book, “The Sun and Her Flowers,” was recently released. Can’t wait to read it!

Samantha King

I found out about Samantha King in high school. She wrote one of the first poetry books that I bought, which was “Born to Love, Curse to Feel.” She’s an inspirational poet for me, because she started writing as a way of therapy and that impressed me. This book was specifically about the bad decisions and feelings when it comes to love. Through her words, she expresses how love is a great feeling, but that it also comes with feelings and decisions that you would not intend to feel. But in the end, you grow into a different person and those mistakes don’t define you.

R.H Sin

Fun fact, Samantha King and R.H Sin are actually engaged! Since I was a big fan of King, I decided to read up on her fiancé and honestly both are of them are meant for each other. Both poets have such a nice flow and it really gets you to reflect on yourself. “Whiskey, Words and a Shovel” is actually a series of books by Sin. I have only read the first one out of the three that have been released. This book, similar to Samantha King’s, talks about how to lead your path to a healthy relationship, even if you have to choose yourself. The reason why I enjoyed reading this is because he was relating into to his relationship with King, which made it so genuine and a great way to actually get real life advice.

Hopefully, these poets will help you bring inspiration into your life! Pick up some of their works and dive in!
