Friendships 103: Turning Platonic Relationships into Romantic Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

“We made a bond from the very beginning. I found my homie and my best friend.”

Disclaimer: Every situation is different. These are OUR opinions about dealing with these types of situations.

1. Establish if the feeling is mutual.

It is better to make sure that the feeling between you and the other person is reciprocated. Look at the signs that the person is throwing at you. Don’t act without evidence.

2. Understand that your relationship will change after you make the first move.

When you decide to pursue your feelings for your friend, you need to understand that after you make that first advance, things cannot go back to the way they were before that very moment.

3. Are they flirting back?

Literally, what it says. Are they curving your advances, or playing along? If they’re playing along, you go girl! Keep on pushing.

4. Be patient.

Everyone is different. Just because you friend does not jump up at the idea of being in a romantic relationship with you, doesn’t mean that they do not reflect your feelings. Give them some time and some space to think.

5. Don’t be scared to shoot your shot. (MAJOR DISCLAIMER: This may backfire!!!)

You’ll never know if they like you, if you don’t ask. Are you getting signs that the feeling is mutual? Then jump in head first; ask them if they like you or ask them on a date (if you’re bout that life).

6. Are your feelings influenced?

This step speaks for itself. Do you want to be in the relationship because everyone thinks that you guys are already dating/would make a cute couple? Or is it because you have genuine feelings?

7. Say no to friends with benefits.

Your feelings are already involved. This will be an awkward stage between friends and a relationship. Don’t do it to yourself.

8. Don’t give them an ultimatum.

DO NOT. I REPEAT! DO NOT GIVE YOUR FRIEND AN ULTIMATUM. Don’t make your friend feel pressured to be in a relationship with you. Do not make them choose between being romantically involved with you, or ending all relations with you. If you force them, the relationship won’t be real.

9. Respect their decision.

If you do not receive the response that you were hoping for, don’t be upset. Do not lash out. Do not be upset at your friend. Accept and respect their decision.

10. You’ve got to be all in. Period.

Are you ready for a relationship with this person? Are you ready to say goodbye to your friendship and hello to love? If so, congratulations. You’re ready to turn that platonic relationship into a romantic one..
