Self-Care isn’t Always Expensive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Inter SG chapter.

Sometimes we think that taking time to take care of ourselves, means spending a lot money. But it really doesn’t.

Self-care is not always getting bath bombs or expensive face masks (all though they are wonderful and needed every now and then). It’s not booking a spa day that will cost you half of your check. Caring for yourself is much more than that.

Here are 3 ways to take care of yourself without spending too much money:

  1. Get enough sleep. Sometimes is okay to let go of school work and just go to bed early. You deserve it. Sleep is essential for our bodies to relax and recharge. Without sleep, it can be hard to concentrate. You will also have problems with your energy. There are a few ways to regulate your sleeping patterns:
  • Wake up at the same time every day
  • Don’t have caffeine after 6pm
  • Plan the next day before going to bed. That way you won’t stress about it while trying to fall asleep
  • Do some yoga and listen to relaxing music before going to bed (for about 30 minutes)
  • Avoid long naps during the day
  • If you are restless, do not stay in bed. Get up and try to relax. Return to bed when you feel more sleepy
  • Drink a cup of sleepy time tea or any other caffeine free tea 30 minutes before bed.

2. Include healthy meals during your busy day. Don’t always run to junk food just to “feel better”. What you eat not only affects your physical health; it affects your energy levels, how you think and how you feel about yourself. Try to eat regular meals, limit fatty, sugary foods. Also drink lots and lost of water. Limit your alcohol use and avoid drugs.

3.Let go of any toxic person around you. Sometimes having friends that make it all about themselves, don’t listen to you or don’t support you can emotionally drain you. Even if you adore this person, sanity comes first.  Your friends and family are an important part of your health and wellbeing. These relationships are a major source of fun and support, which is why you need to kick those who stress you out 24/7, out of your life.  but they can also be stressful at times and keep those who always have you back.

Now sit back, breathe, follow these tips and relax. It’s the tiny and simplest things what can help you take care of yourself. Do not over think it, always make yourself a priority.
