This past Tuesday, Boston University’s Her Campus Chapter hosted a social media branding night, Let’s Talk Social Media Branding, for the Simmons and Northeastern chapters.
The speakers included Regan Cleminson (@venturetravelist), Samuel Thompson (@samuel.thompson), Kate Weiser (@bucketlistboston), Tiffany Lopinsky (@bostonfoodies) and Arlin Moore (@arlinmoore), who all spoke on how they created their brands.
Here are my top five key takeaways from what they said.
1. Social media branding is a balance between giving your viewers what they want, and what you want.
If you don’t like what you are posting, then your account won’t shine with passion. People like to view pages that are intriguing to them, but if it isn’t intriguing to you, then how will it be to other people?
2. Responding to your DM’s can be the easiest way to create fan loyalty.
It doesn’t take that long to respond to someone who DM’s you about your brand. They want to get to know you because they feel that they do from your profile. Talk to them and see what they like. They may even have some new ideas for you.
3. Social media is a public version of yourself.
You should be transparent in your branding, but make sure to present your best self. Once something is posted, it is out there forever. Make sure your posts and content are representing yourself and your brand in a positive light.
4. If you hold yourself back with perfection, you won’t be able to see what works.
If you are just starting your new social media brand, don’t be afraid to try new things. If you hold yourself back with trying to create the perfect image and the perfect text, you might be missing out on what actually works for your page.
5. Don’t overthink things.
You never know what the new trends will be. If something is important to you, it is probably important to other people. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. If you don’t try, then you will never succeed.
Thank you to the speakers that came. If you want to learn more about their brands DM them on Instagram!
