How to Spread Kindness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Believe it or not, the holiday season can be a difficult time for a lot of people. That is why being thankful is not only important in November, but year-round. Spreading joy and kindness is a simple, everyday task. Sometimes a smile is all a person needs to lift their spirit. Make it your duty to spread some kindness, joy, cheer and love this holiday season to those around you. You never know what people are going through.

1. Smile

“Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.” -Mother Teresa

A simple smile can go a long way, whether it be to a stranger in the mall or a fellow student on the quad. Smiles remind us that we are seen and valued.

2. Random acts of kindness

A couple of years ago my mom and I were in the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru line. When we pulled up to the window to pay for our coffees the cashier told us that the person in front of us had already paid for our order. As a young teenager I was shocked and confused as to why someone would ever pay for a stranger’s food. My mom explained to me what a “random act of kindness” was and how important it is for me to do that for other people. It is a selfless act that can really brighten someone’s spirit.

Try to buy someone’s coffee next time you go through the drive-thru!

3. Compliment

There’s nothing better than receiving a compliment when you’re wearing a great outfit, having an on-point hair day or are wearing a new pair of cute boots. Compliments are super easy to throw around. If you see someone wearing an adorable scarf or pair of shoes that you really like, tell them! It could be the highlight of their day.

4. Respect the workforce

Believe it or not, people work everyday before big holidays, on big holidays and even the days to follow. I work at a flower shop in Jamestown, Rhode Island, and I have to work everyday the week of Christmas. It sucks, but being in the flower business means that I am supplying people with their Christmas trees, wreaths, centerpieces and so much more. So between balancing work and all of my exams, I am super stressed this season…and there’s nothing I hate more than rude customers. Be kind to your barista, waiter, retail clerk and florist. They are super busy and are taking time out of their lives to work so that you can have an enjoyable holiday season. All they would like is a “please,” “thank you,” and “have a good day.”

Please go out and spread joy and kindness in your everyday life. It is one of the most genuine and unique qualities that humans have…and also the simplest task to fulfill.
