How (And Why) To Theme Your Instagram

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

In our world today, so many people have Instagram accounts that look very coordinated and trendy. It boosts their aesthetic, and makes his or her feed appear to be more put-together and organized (which everyone wants). Seeing people who are Instagram bloggers or models instantly make us want to improve our own quality of our accounts. so they look super trendy and fun. But how exactly do you achieve an Instagram theme? Well look no further, here are some tips and tricks that you can keep in the back of your mind, when starting to theme your instagram.

But what exactly is an Instagram theme? People base their themes off of so many different aspects of their pictures. You can choose your theme to be a color scheme. For instance, some people only post photos that follow a burnt orange theme, or a theme that incorporates whites and grays. When you use similar colors, it makes photos more cohesive on their feed Other themes can be based off of seasons. During summertime the photos would consist of bright colors, summertime activities, and the pictures themselves would have a bright exposure. There are so many other themes you can choose from, but choosing a theme and sticking to it makes your instagram feel more consistent and put-together.

But you should remember, taking photos for your Instagram should be something one does for fun, something that makes them happy, something that truly exemplifies the life they live and their personality. In that sense, having a theme can be a fun way to enhance your own personal style, color scheme, and shows followers a little bit more about who you are as a person.

With that, the first tip while taking pictures for your instagram is that there are ways to set up your photos before taking them. What I mean by this is that, if you are looking at your subject and its surroundings, separate the photo into three equal parts. Once you do, place your main subject in one of the three sections of the area. Having the subject alternate in these three sections makes your photos more consistent, but still their own–and having your photos not look the exact same is extremely important.

Another tip is once you choose your color scheme or the brightness you like in your photos, is  to stick to it. For example, there is a photo app called VSCO where they have so many filters you can choose from, and it also allows you to adjust aspects such as the brightness, contrast, saturation, temperature, shadows, and highlights of your photos. When you have made up your mind of a set theme and color, you can choose the filter that you like, and the amount of brightness you feel is best for you pictures. After that, just be sure to be consistent. Doing this will make your feed very aesthetically pleasing.

Now, if you want to have your feed represent you, take pictures and base your theme on your interests. Some people will theme their instagrams based on their lifestyles whether they do fashion, health style, home decor, or so many other things to give their followers a sense of who they are, and what they love.

Now it is important to know that you can always switch up your Instagram theme every once in a while. As we all know, the holidays are among us, so a lot of people may have made their themes to revolve around the holidays with festive photos, and with color schemes that go along with whatever holiday they are celebrating. Once this season passes, however, they will probably change their theme back to their normal or starting theme. If you want to theme based off of a certain color scheme for a while, but then find a new one that you are simply obsessed with—that is perfectly fine! Changing things up adds flavor, and your own personal touch to your feed. Having a change in the colors and type of content also keeps your account exciting and diverse.

But at the end of the day, having a theme is not for everybody. Some people just like to post pictures despite any categorizing or details. That is completely fine as well. Just be sure to make your account yours (whatever that may entail), and have fun with your social media, making it unique in your own special way.
