The new semester and new year have descended upon us and I spent about an hour staring at this blank document wondering what to write about. It might be a new beginning, but I am the same person I was one day ago or one month ago, and I do not have it figured out. It’s okay to not know what you’re doing, and here are some reasons why.

Exploring different things will keep you from settling
There’s nothing worse than being bored. If you keep searching for what really makes you happy, you’ll skip over the jobs, the clubs, the people and the classes that don’t really spark the passion within you.

You’ll get some really neat stories
Did you try camping and end up in West Virginia on a mountain staring at a bear? Did you take swing dance for a week and learn some basic spins? Did you do a community theater show and find yourself at the cast party at IHOP at three in the morning on a Thursday night? You never know where your adventures will take you.

No one actually has it figured out
While your future might be up in the air, so is everyone else’s. Those people who seem so confident, cool and collected are really just as confused as the rest of us. Relax a little and enjoy the ride.

It can save you money in the long-term
Instead of changing your major eight times, being undecided allows you to take an array of classes in all of your interests instead of being pigeonholed. This way you won’t take classes that later don’t count towards your major, but you’ll see what you genuinely enjoy learning about.

You’ll make cool friends
People who are passionate about what they do are wildly entertaining and often great buds. They might have found something they truly enjoy and want to share it with you and others. You can embrace their stories, and you’ll be introduced to things you’d never imagined.

You’ll find something that you genuinely love
If you don’t rush into something, you’ll have time to grow and find things that you enjoy doing. You will grow and change and so will what you want to do. You can experiment with a wide variety of activities and jobs.
