Puerto Rico’s 2018 has been kicked off with great releases by various artists. With new music by artists like Bairoa, PJ Sin Suela, and  Gerry Pomales, one can say that Puerto Rico’s independent art scene is pretty active, and rapper FOKINFROID is not one to stay behind. After various years of grinding through Soundcloud and YouTube, the musician recently opened a Spotify account and released new work through the platform. In order to kickoff 2018 he dropped his latest single “Vibras”, where he implores haters to back off while also rapping about sexual content where he tells a female to leave her boyfriend so she can have sexual relations with him.

FROID starts his 2018 with an energetic trap track where he sings more than he raps. In “Vibras”, the rapper tells haters to keep negativity to themselves, as he only rolls with good vibes and energy. He also touches on, what has now become stereotypical, sexual subject matter which can really seem like it comes out of nowhere. Trap music used to be all about harsh lifestyles and how it was hard to get out of them. Now it seems as if most of them focus on either sex or drug use. The song’s initial subject matter is all about having a little ego and being positive about being yourself. Thereby, this sudden change from positivity to sex can seem a bit unrelated. But the problems in FROID’s track do not end there.

While FROID’s “Vibras” might be a dynamic add to anyone’s playlists, it does suffer a bit in its production. One of the main problems in the track is how the beat can sometime’s overshadow FROID’s vocals. In today’s rap climate, there are many rappers who are nothing without their beats. This should not be a problem for FROID, as he has proven in the past that he can balance his rapping with the beat. However, in “Vibras” it seems like it’s hard to understand his lyrics at times due to the overpowering beat. Moreover, the fact that the entire song is done with autotune can be a bit of a turn-off especially, when FROID actually goes into a bit of lyricism somewhere in the middle of the track. Do not get me  wrong, this is a great add for any trap lovers’ playlists, but based on some of the artist’s past work, this new single can come off a bit underwhelming.

FOKINFROID’s 2018 kickoff single “Vibras” is a good track for anyone’s trap playlists, but fans of some of his previous work might find it to be a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, I highly suggest checking it out and coming to your own conclusions. I, for one, would use the tune in these two situations, as background music or for a lit party.
