The DACA dilemma is extensive, so here’s a concise summary as to why it’s in the news today:
The Constitutionality of the DACA program has been questioned since its birth during the Obama Administration because it was implemented through executive order despite Congress’s multiple rejections through the normal legislative process. If you didn’t know, DACA (or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) protects about 800,000 illegal immigrants from deportation who were brought to the U.S. illegally. The program grants them permission to work, study, and get a driver’s license.
President Trump kicked the program over to Congress, which gives Congress six months to reach an agreement. Top Congressional Democrats, such as Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, thought that President Trump was going to sign the Dream Act that protects the undocumented immigrants in exchange for beefed up border security. Since then, President Trump released his immigration policy priorities and now wants an extension of the DACA program. Those priorities include: defunding sanctuary cities, more ICE officers, and funding for the border wall. Those top Congressional Dems very quickly disagreed with that proposal.
As many of you probably know, the government shut down on January 19th because legislatures were unable to come to an agreement regarding immigration policy. Fortunately, the shutdown ended and has reopened in order to continue the discussion.
