5 Remedies For When You Are Starting To Get Sick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

It seems like it is that time of the year again, where almost everyone you know has fallen ill to some type of cold, or worse, the flu. Becoming sick is one of the worst feelings in the world, especially when your day to day schedule is jam-packed. Below are five remedies you need for when you start to become sick. Cold, be gone!

1. Liquid (Tea, Water, Gatorade)

My go to when I wake up in the morning with a sore throat? Peppermint Tea. The hot liquid will do magic on a dry, scratchy throat. If peppermint tea isn’t your thing, opt for a different herbal with no caffeine such as chamomile, (caffeine will make your throat even soarer)! For the rest of the day, I drink plenty of water and sometimes, Gatorade. Replenishing electrolytes when your body is trying to fight a common cold will help you feel better! Be warned, however, only drink one bottle of Gatorade because too much can cause an imbalance in salts in your system!

2. Vitamin C (Tablet, Fruit)

A supplement will help you gain some energy if you are not feeling well! In addition, eat fruit! Oranges are rich in Vitamin C, so having one in the morning will help you feel zesty for the whole day! Personally, I’m not a huge orange fan so I usually opt for a Vitamin C tablet that you can get at any organic supermarket such as Whole Foods or Trader Joes!

3. Saline Solution

Stuffy nose? A sea salt spray will help get all the guck out of your nose. Depending on the spray you buy, you can usually squirt it into your nostrils several times a day.

4. Vicks VapoRub

I love this stuff! Rub some of it on your chest or behind your ear, and you will feel the coolness of the rub burning away the germs. Vicks is a total must when you are sick!

5. Cough Drops

A must when you have a sore throat! I pop one of the suckers in my mouth when I first wake up in the morning to help sooth my throat in addition to tea. However, make sure you don’t take too many cough drops- they are medicine not candy!
