Loveless in Tallahassee: City Ranked 5th Most Single City in the U.S.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Tallahassee is famous for a lot of things—football, Greek life, academics, research—but as of last week, there’s one more thing this city with Southern charm can add to that list: single people. According to a nationwide survey done by 247wallst, Tallahassee, Florida ranked fifth on a list of the top 25 cities with the most singles.

The survey was conducted by summing the percentage of 384 metropolitan areas with individuals aged 15 and over who have never been married, are divorced and are widowed; all information was taken from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community survey. Taking a look at the list, the city ranked #25 is Corvallis, Oregon with a single population ranking of 55.1 percent and the number one singles city in the United States is Ithaca, New York with a single population ranking of 61.6 percent. Tallahassee is not too far behind, with a singles population ranking of 59.1 percent. “People are getting married later in life,” says Cheyenne Buckingham, a features writer for 24/7 Wall St. “And indeed, most of the 25 metro areas on this list are relatively young.”

Many of the areas on this list are college towns—Tallahassee, Gainesville, Chico and even Ithaca. Most of these cities have thousands of college students who are getting their degrees, having fun and planning on leaving in four years. Very few of these young adults are looking for “the one” which means most of them are single. In a city comprised of mostly college students, it’s no surprise that Tallahassee would rank high on the list of singles-heavy cities.

So, what does this mean for you? Well, with Valentine’s day just a few days away, this means you probably don’t have to worry about getting your significant other a gift, and you don’t have to worry about making a reservation or spending a ridiculous amount of money on flowers. Instead, you can go out or stay in. You can put your makeup on or put a face mask on and order a large pizza all for yourself. You can hang out with your roommates or you can pull an all-nighter in Stroz. Basically, the opportunities are endless.

Tallahassee ranking fifth of the top 25 cities with the most singles also means that there really are plenty of fish in the sea. You can be picky, keeping your standards high. If you’re not exactly looking to get tied down, then you also have endless opportunities to gain new experiences, meet new people, and just have fun.

There’s no pressure to get married, get in a relationship or have any of your life figured out. You’re young and you have bucket lists and goals you want to achieve. If life is anything like The Bachelor, then you’re going to get your rose and it’s going to be great. But until then, just enjoy the time you have with your fellow single ‘Noles, collegiettes.
